Self-Studied APs

I’m curious how much others in the CC community have done with self-studying.

Last year as a junior, I self-studied APUSH and got a 5 (my regular US teacher was quite good though, and I knew a good amount of history already, so it wasn’t too bad).

This year I might self-study AP Macro.

How about you all? How have your results been with self-studying.

Bump, i want to self study AP Psych since it isnt offered at my school

If your school offers a given AP class, colleges want you to take the class and the test rather than just the test. If your school doesn’t offer a given AP class, colleges don’t expect you to take it and you’d be better off working on your ECs.

There’s generally no reason to self-study AP exams unless you want college credit, or if you want to meet prerequisites for a more advanced class at a local college (for example, my high school didn’t offer any AP calculus classes, so I self-studied AP Calculus BC so I’d be able to take multivariable calculus and other stuff in my senior year).

I self-studied AP Statistics (3), AP US Government (3), AP US History (4), and AP Calculus BC (4) when I was a high school junior. The first two weren’t useful because my scores weren’t high enough (although I used the government score to fulfill a graduation requirement at my high school), but I got 11 transfer credit hours for the others.

My son self studied AP Micro and Macro, 5 on both. I think self studying is useful when you can eliminate a core requirement sequence. He may self study Latin. His high school offers 4 years but no AP. We will see if he still cares when admission decisions come out.

I self-studied AP Physics C: E&M only because my school does not offer it and I intend to major in physics.

I want to double major in biology and political science, so for political science Im planning on self studying AP comparative government this year because it is not offered at my school and it’s something I love,

I’m taking IB Math HL Yr 2 and IB Psych (Junior), but also planning on taking the AP equivalent of both (AP Calc BC and AP Psych) as it only requires a little more self-studying. I also want to self-study AP Micro and/or Micro, but don’t know exactly how to do so or recommended methods - for now just planning to go through the Review Books. BTW, if anyone has any good tips for self-studying, specifically with AP Micro/Macro, that would be awesome!

I self studied AP micro in about a week and got a 4 (I skipped over the game theory section and two of the free response questions were on game theory, oh well). It was not that hard, and would have been really easy with more time. This website (http://www.appracticeexams.com) has really helpful resources for anyone trying to self study for AP exams, it is definitely worth checking out.
