Sell Me Cornell

OK, so I am interested in getting an undergrad degree in pure math. Which college would be the best choice if I want to go on to grad school, and although this is the cornell board, please give me an objective response. The choices are: Cornell, Rutgers Honors Program (full ride), CMU, and Lehigh. I've also been waitlisted at UChicago and Williams...

suggest go where you think you’ll like it best.

Sell them all yourself. make lists of pros cons, listen to your own sales pitches. You may find that one pitch is more convincing. that would be better than my pitch because it would be coming from you, and I am not you.

It’s up to you…I got into every single school you got into, and I chose Cornell. For pure math, Cornell would also be the best choice likely. Just visit the colleges though before you make the decision…they are all very different.

I agree with CornellPerson. Try looking at websites and see how the offerings & programs compare to each other, especially if you already have an idea about what aspects of math interest you most. You could also try e-mailing a professor for more information and answers to any of your specific questions - I suggest Allen Hatcher, my current math prof who is a great teacher and super nice, but you could go with anyone. :-)

If you absolutely know you want to go on to grad school in math, I would pick between CMU, Cornell, or Rutgers. All have very respectable math programs. If there is any potential that you would change your mind, I would go with Cornell because it offers the widest array of alternative (and good) options for you.

actually i’d pick rutgers honors since it’s 1) a great school already and you got into honors and 2) free. the second is especially helpful if you’re looking at going to grad school. then next i’d go with cornell, uchicago/williams if you get off the waitlist, cmu then lehigh

Well, a PhD in Math would be paid for by the graduate program, along with a handsome stipend.

another thing, how would the quality of education compare for undergraduate mathematics…ive heard undergrad school doesnt really matter as long as its decent, and how would the quality/attention/research opportunities be between cornell and rutgers honors program?

good point cayuga. okay so then back to square one for me hahaha. actually, then cornell all the way hehe

You’re right. It doesn’t really matter for getting into a PhD program, although it might help on the margins because more Cornell PhDs in Math are teaching at top PhD programs so you will be more of a known commodity. You might get more attention in you non-math classes at Rutgers. Hard to say. Is it one of those programs where you are in a separate dorm and everything?

The extra-curricular and student-life aspects of Cornell and Rutgers will differ. In either good ways or bad ways. Rutgers students will definitely be more laid back.

But any student who would like attention from Math professors at Cornell is going to get it. I was lowly ILRie taking linear algebra and my Math professors would spend a lot of time with me.
