Ah you do have more choices! I didn’t commit right away but I did commit before any of the admitted students weekends so hopefully I avoided that rush! I’m kinda thinking BJ or South now. Not feeling Maclean, or any other off campus housing options in general. It’s really much nicer to be closer to main campus. Snell-Hitchcock is also another interesting option but I don’t think I’d get in. Max P is okay, but I don’t think I’d want to run the risk of living w/ the party as opposed to occasionally going to a party. Big difference!

Gonnabefamous, you sound like a good fit for South.

@clinique It’s just a matter of personal preference. I just didn’t like the vibe I got when I was there" (for reasons explained above). Also I find the building itself to be gaudy and unattractive in general.

@empirical How would you say Max compares to South?

Same question as luminalcoin8 - the more I think about housing the more South is seeming like a good choice, but I would love to hear more about it! I agree w/ you empirical, I was not really considering South before b/c it’s across the Midway and I didn’t necessarily want to walk across the Midway in the dead of a Chicago winter but culture-wise, South seems like my place anyone who can pitch in about South or even BJ, I’d appreciate your thoughts! And to that person I kinda accidentally ignored who was saying they stayed in Maclean too, we got different impressions for sure! I’m glad you ended up more sure about UChicago as opposed to less I wish I had been there that weekend (not for the parties! haha), you sound like a cool person.

South is a great mix of partiers and non-partiers. It’s probably a half and half split. And even the partiers are super friendly. I’d put myself in between the two spectrums. The people at South are also a lot more “normal” than the people in surrounding dorms. Eating at South Dining Commons, one can really tell the difference between the house tables on the South Campus Res. Hall side and the side that hosts those of the other dorms (BJ, I-house, etc.). The other dorms, for the most part, will house the more “quirky” kids.

Max houses most of the athletes, they have a much bigger drinking scene, and it’s the closest thing that UChicago has to a state-school vibe. People there are also very chill, but I felt a less welcoming vibe when I’ve visited friends there.

Both are social dorms, with Max being the more social of the two. South is a great middle ground, though, and it’s probably where you’ll find people that are like most kids at other top schools. Of all the stereotypes I’ve heard for housing, the only residence hall I haven’t heard one for is South. Hope this helps!

Some of the strangest people I’ve met or will probably ever meet attended UChicago while I was there.

Very different than my present experience at grad school.
