Semester at Sea and Similar Programs

Thank you, @mom60. I will look into it!

Thank you all for the comments and feedback.

@irlandaise‌ I am not familiar with the high schools near me so I’m unsure if they have trips abroad. Even the schools back in my hometown didn’t go abroad. If I see something similar to that, I will lol into it. That sounds fun - being a “counselor” abroad.

It’s my friend’s D who WWOOFed, not mine. She did a short one in an adjacent state first to get the hang, then did it abroad. She liked it very much. It’s work - you do farm - but for that free room and board and neat experiences. Nice option for a small budget.

My D spent a semester in Tanzania through SIT. She had friends who went abroad through SIT on a program that visited several different countries. SIT has summer sessions, not sure if the multi-country programs are available in the summer, but it’s worth looking into. My D’s experience with SIT was very positive.

I found a nice volunteering program that allows me to travel and volunteer. No farming necessary! :stuck_out_tongue: International Volunteer HQ. Turns out an old friend from high school just came back from his trip and has already paid the deposit for another one. I’m going to message him and ask him about his program. He went to Tanzania and is going to Ghana next summer.

I’ve been looking into the countries and while Europe isn’t on there, a lot of Central American countries are. The prices aren’t bad. I could stay in country for a month and the program fees would only be about $1,000. I saw you could go from one program to another, so if I wanted to I could go from Ecuador for a month and then Columbia for a month. And it wouldn’t cost me much! Like…maybe $1600 in program fees, not really including airfare, visas, and spending money. Sounds like a great deal to me!

I won’t be alone. There are 30 to even 50 volunteers at the place at a given time. While people are coming and going, there are people around that I will be able to do things with and explore places with. And they eve give Spanish lessons while you’re in your program!

Looks like I found something to do an upcoming summer. :D

That sounds good-and you’re right about the fees being low! My D leaves for Ghana tomorrow with Free the Children. If her school district wasn’t paying the kids’ way, it would be $5,000 each including airfare.

One thing you might consider is a summer semester at a European program–you can take a couple of classes, and travel around on the weekends.
