Hello all, I currently attend an online honors private school (that was a pretentious mouthful haha) and I’ve decided to give up my summer vacation in order to graduate in December. The main reason I did this was so that I could spend what would’ve been my second semester working and collecting as much money as possible before I go to university. My advisor is now recommending that I spend this “free” semester at a local community college because she believes it would greatly enhance my college application. Do any of you have experience with a situation like this and was it worth it/help the application process and your general educational-being? Any thoughts on the subject would be great- thanks! x
I’m just a research-addicted mom, so I’m sure your counselor knows far more than me. That said, if you hope to go to a school with great scholarships, it seems like a lot are exclusively for Freshman. If you went to community college and it is not dual credit while in high school, you might miss out.
What are your stats? If you feel the need to save up heaps of money for school, I’m guessing you would also like to attend a school with generous aid.
I have a 4.0 GPA, a 2150 on the SAT, 780 on SAT II Math (Level 1), 790 SAT II English, 800 SAT II History, and all my classes have been Honors since my freshman year with 3 AP courses (Pre-Calc, Physics, & Brit. Lit.) for/in my senior year. I’ve done a lot of charity work with organizations that usually surround LGBT and homeless youth causes and have been published by Huffington Post (Teen), all 4 years/editions of my school’s Literary Magazine, and won 2 national writing competitions. My heart is set on the Journalism program of Northwestern or NYU. So, new opinion on the semester of community college?
BE AWARE> If you take ANY College classes that DONT appear on your HS transcript- you will be considered a TRANSFER STUDENT to many colleges. That will GREATLY reduce your chances of acceptance at most top colleges, as they have very few openings for non freshman. So MAKE SURE your HS will give you credit on your HS transcript for any college classes you take. Other wise graduate along with the rest of your class.
