Semester to Quarters - Transfer shock

Has anyone here transferred from a school that had semesters to a school that is on a quarter system?

I was at a community college in New Jersey, left with a 3.08 GPA (damn spanish & philosophy class dropped my gpa a bit :() and now I am a sophmore @ Oregon State University. I just took my first exam in my intro level biology class and didnt do so well. I didn't fail but I thought I'd do alot better. I anticipated "real" college being alot more work, it has been, and even tried to compensate by doing more work than I was supposed to @ community college.

I am kind of chaulking it up to the fact that when I was a fulltime student @ community college I set my schedule up so that I only had 1 class per day and on top of that, I had semesters. I haven't had to attend more then one class a day since highschool which was over 3 years ago. Right now I have 4 classes a day two times a week.

I am alittle discouraged as I work very hard and want to do well. I've also had a hard time sleeping and have been feeling sick as well...I know this is normal but I guess i'm looking for a little support here or to hear someone elses story. I am twenty-two years old and this is my first time away from home, I don't really miss home but have found myself lacking motivation as well..which wasn't the case when I was @ community college.

I don't go out until the weekends but im considering stopping altogether until my grades are where I want them to be.

guess not? :(

A transition to a new school is hard.

Is it too late to drop a class? A W on your transcript might be worth it.

There is still time to bring up your grades. Go to office hours, ask for help from the TA, make a study group with peers, study your rear end off. You might also want to check out your school’s counseling center.

Next semester you might want to try balancing your schedule better.

This is when you realize – actualize, really, rather than just cognitively know – that nobody is holding your hand. You’re free to succeed or fail, progress, regress or stagnate as you choose. Community College is populated by a much more diverse sea of people in terms of motivation and capability: a wide swath of those people lack both. At a 4-year university, it’s go time. You’ve got capable competition, and in the real world, nobody gives a **** if you’re left behind. Either succeed or don’t, but whichever you choose, do it mightily.

Coincidentally, my schedule is identical to yours, and as far as I’m concerned it’s the best thing ever. But that’s just me.

I can still bring my grade up, its not feasible to drop the course. I really just need to get a good nights rest, something I havent really had since I left home and probably the reason ive been sick.

youre def right about that GTarrant. I am staying in this weekend and getting up to speed on my studies, not to mention trying to get over this damn cold ive had.
