Depends on the school and how credit hours are set up. You could have 21 hours at some schools per semester, but each course is worth more credit hours (i.e. 4 credits versus 3 at the school with an 18 credit maximum). Look at the school’s tuition rates…it should state in there how many credits per semester is considered full time, and past what number of credits there is an additional fee per credit.

21.5 courses is the max for most schools without a petition. Quarter system goes by quite fast, so I can not imagine anyone with a difficult major doing anymore than that.
Well course offerings vary school to school and major to major. Like math for example, most schools whether quarter or not, only offer some courses once every two years.

Well I go to a school with the quarterly system and it is 20 units max for ONLY honors students. I don’t know about other students.

My school requires you get an override to take more than 18 in a semester. And then they charge you more for it.

I see. I ask because of the James Franco Project and apparently he took 62 credits a quarter or something at UCLA.

if 18-21 credits a quarter is the norm then 62 is insane

[url=<a href=“Print Page”>Print Page]Print Page/url

Insane and ridiculously expensive…you’d be paying 3 quarters’ tuition for one quarter.

Unless they do it like at certain restaurants known for having some ridiculously large item like a super-sized sunday or burger that if you finish it all, it’s free…if you can manage 62 hours in one quarter we’ll give it all to you free? =P

I go to a school on the quarter system. Max load is 20 units (for everyone), but you can petition for more up to 23 (for seniors who need to graduate). I usually take about 4 classes or 16 units per quarter, or about 12 classes per year, plus or minus a couple. Last year I took ~50 units. I don’t think there’s an extra charge for more units at my school… Taking 12 units costs the same as taking 20.

…HAHAHAHA. Wouldn’t that be lovely.

62 credit hours is a lot, but sure is possible. I mean in high school you had 40 hours of school a week + homework.

For the quarter system, the max. number of credit hours (prior to petition) is 20 creds. Usually that is about four-five classes. Taking any more than 18 is highly discouraged.

I don’t understand why. If you dedicate yourself and cut out the parties and going out every weekend you can do it. I for one would love to take 20 units a quarter, I’ll finish college in four quarters counting AP credit.

^ Not with all majors can easily take 20-21 units if they dedicate themselves unless they are very gifted.

Sure like engineering or hard science. I’m poli sci with philosophy and econ minors.

62 units!? That’s insane! Even before you factor in the other jobs and publicity level and girlfriend. Especially since film classes and such are some of the most time-consuming classes out there.

Is there a catch of some sort? Like there are some independent classes at my uni that you can get 10 units max I think, so maybe he’s just doing six of those?

I call BS:

Only on CC would anyone say this. At my school, which is admittedly on the semester system, 62 credit hours would be about 80 hours of actual class time a week. You just literally wouldn’t have time to eat, go to the bathroom, and do all of your assignments on top of that.

A good theory I found is that either James Franco or the writer got something backwards and he actually took 26 units, which is infinitely more believable.

Quarter system at my school, 45 credits is normal. >53 is normal. By 45 credits, they mean 45 hours spent in lab/class/homework a week.

I’m still going with my restaurant analogy, take 3 semester’s worth, and if you complete it all with at least a 2.0, you get it free. =P
