Semester vs Quarter

Hi,

Can anyone tell me one good reason why they would choose a school with a quarter system over a semester system? I did a lot of research on transferring but one thing I can't answer myself is why people would choose quarter over semester?

I have all the pros in semester and cons in quarter, but there's got to be a good reason because it still exists. I mean why would you: 1. pay more money (since 3 quarters = 2 semesters) 2. having to have midterms after 2 weeks?

Thank you,

Maybe a good reason in there^. For me semester or quarter system it doesn’t matter.

Well you have only one midterm per class if it’s a quarter. I have 3 midterms for my chem this semester. I’ve had two midterms for most classes.
Also, people say they are able to take more classes if they choose the quarter system, so I guess you have more chances to explore.
You don’t pay much more because the fees for a quarter is lower than that for a semester.
You do have to pay a lot of campus fees at other UCs though. Cal’s gym is optional and only $10. At UCI I think its over a $100 mandatory, so these extra fees are what result in a higher overall fee.
Hmm I don’t know why else you would pick quarter over semester. Maybe because school starts in September rather than August? But then again, summer starts earlier for semester schools.

“well you have only one midterm per class if it’s a quarter”

not necessarily true… i have plenty of friends that have ONE midterm at the 3rd week, ANOTHER at the 6th, and a FINAL. if you end up having one of those and you fall behind, you fall WAAAAAAAAAAY behind.

yea. quarter or semester, doesnt matter for me

i don’t think people pick schools based on quarter vs. semester rather what type of university it is, i’m not going to pass up UCLA just because it’s a quarter system, i’d suck it up for any school like that whether quarter or semester who really cares.

it’s definitely possible to have more than one midterm in the quarter system. this is more often than not the case for me (i’m a UCD student).

i do enjoy being able to take more classes every year than i would be able to on a semester. also, the quarters FLY by, which is good whenever you take required classes that you’re not particularly interested in.

Actually having more midterms per semester might be better so you have more chances to improve your grade.
Also you have 12 grade reports for quarters, as opposed to 8 for semesters. Your grade in each class has less weight in a quarter than your grade for a semester class because you have more chances to improve your GPA if you screw up in one class.

My son loved the quarter system. If he hated the class he knew it wouldn’t drag on forever!

I think it takes a certain personality…I don’t think I would have liked being on quarter system.

I like quarter more than semester. My CC is semester based, and I tend to do better in winter intersession (6 weeks while semester is 16 weeks) :stuck_out_tongue: There are just too much time to waste in semester system…

I’ve never been in the quarter system, but personally I think the semester system allows you to slack off waaayy too much. At least in my personal experience, like sweetnezz said though, I wouldn’t just NOT go to a quarter system school because of that.

I believe semester is better. It gives you more time to study the materials, you don’t need to take a whole lot of different classes each year compared to quarter system, and saves you money on books.

Yes, I agree with everyone here. I see a lot of people here say you get to take more classes and you’d be able to bring up your grades easier since there are more midterms in a quarter system. But what about the down side of it? Do you really want to take “more” classes to earn a diploma? And by having more midterms also means more chance of messing up?

You can take more easier classes. I know there are more university wide requirements at quarter schools, most of which are pretty easy.
