semi-chance me?

i’m a sophomore in high school and though a lot of things aren’t set in stone yet (so my chances rn are probably difficult to guess at) but this is more of a way of checking in and seeing where i am rn, and where i could change things to increase my chances of getting into penn?

here’s the breakdown so far:

  • 3.85 UW GPA; 4.40 W GPA
  • prospective chemistry major
  • african american female
  • college or higher level classes i’m in currently are: AP Language (was selected to take this a year early, instead of English 10), AP US Gov, Honors Precalculus. Next year i’ll take AP Chem (double-period), AP World History, AP BC Calc, IB English, and senior year i plan on taking physics, AP statistics, AP psychology, among other APs (these are the only classes I’ve really fleshed out for senior year).
  • I’m considering applying to do an internship with the NIH either next summer or first semester senior year.
  • went to a magnet humanities/communications middle school

ECs:

  • high school cross country team for (hopefully) 4 years (I plan on doing it every year)
  • high school swim team for at least 2 years (if i don’t do swim team next year, it will be because i left to become manager of the winter track team, which i will then do for 2 years)
  • in various school bands for about 7? years
  • girl scout for 9 years
  • certified lifeguard (i’m working as one this summer)
  • i also plan on becoming part of my school's pre-med club, going to a summer program at a college to take courses next year, entering several writing and art contests, etc. my friend also runs a nonprofit organization, so i think i will also help her to manage that.

any suggestions for what i could do to increase my chances? i know it’s pretty hard to tell right now lol but any sort of idea of where i am would be super helpful!
cheers!

@ryecatcher5 your GPA is good and on track to be competitive for Penn. Your SATs will also of course be a major deciding factor. Your ECs are solid but nothing really stands out. And that is ok, there are many kids who get in without super-impressive ECs.

I feel the internship will definitely help. Penn values students who have practical experience in their fields of interest.

Overall i d say you are on the right track! keep it up!

thanks so much for your response! i’ll definitely look into internship opportunities then. i’ll also keep my eye out for more ec opportunities as well.

thank you!
