Semi-finalists sending PSAT scores to two schools???

I knew that the NMSC had done away with the high scorers being given the opportunity to send their PSAT scores to two colleges. However, I thought I had read somewhere that the semi-finalists would still be able to do that. Does anyone know? If semi-finalists are able to send their PSAT scores to two schools, how is that facilitated?

I am just curious… Why would you do that and what do you expect to gain?

Well, perhaps as a way to show demonstrated interest. If colleges know that a person can only choose two colleges to send scores, that might mean that the child has a strong interest in that school. I’m totally making that up/speculating on that!

However, we live in a low cut-off state, but my dc has a score that would qualify anywhere and then some. It would demonstrate that dc didn’t just make it because we are in a lower cut-off state. That may not be worth anything either. Ha ha!

I can see your logic but still not sure how helpful it will be. I suppose you can send it in yourself so they can keep it in your kid’s file. We have two NMF/NMS boys but I don’t think we ever used their PSAT scores once they made the cut. Good luck.

^Interesting. Are they semi-finalists/finalists from previous years? Because if so, they would have been given the opportunity to submit scores to two schools even when they were named high scorers. This is the first year that option has gone away. What I’m trying to understand is how that was both facilitated in the past and if it’s still being done now, but only for semi-finalists. I have no idea how high scorers were able to send those scores in the past. Not sure if it is done by the student or if the high school does it.

ETA: And, it may not be helpful at all, but it can’t hurt if the option is there! I’m not trying to “force” the score on anyone, but if it can be sent as it has in the past, I want us to avail ourselves of that opportunity.

It wouldn’t hurt. I agree.

S1 (HS class of 08’) and S2 (HS class of 12’) made the cut. I honestly don’t remember using that service at all. Regardless, it wasn’t a big part of their college app processes anyway. I also don’t know how much emphasis colleges put on PSAT scores - my guess is “not much.” I am sure colleges care more about kids’ SAT/ACT scores than PSAT. But, as you said, it wouldn’t hurt. :)

I just called NMSC and was told that sending scores to two schools is no longer available to anyone. Apparently they have done away with that. The lady I spoke with says a booklet with names of all semi-finalists is sent to all regionally accredited colleges and universities.

I am sure you are correct that it wouldn’t have counted for much. I do think it was a nice option for students who had particularly high scores.

Did you get any idea as to when colleges and universities receive SF names? I’m just asking out of curiosity because some of the emails and letters my daughter has been receiving over the past several months suggest that the schools are aware of SF status. My daughter’s score should be safe but we have not been notified.

Our state flagship has received all of the names of the NMSF in the state directly from CB. The university uses them for admission to the Honors College and to calculate some merit aid. (They also have many other criteria for merit aid, including GPA and SAT/ACT scores, etc.)

Thanks, glido. That makes sense.

There are schools like Minnesota that offer scholarship to NMF students who name them as top school choice. I wonder if there is any change on that?

@billcsho I doubt this changed as the colleges still indicate you have to designate them as your #1 choice to get the scholarship.
