Senator Scott Brown and Tufts

Just curious. Scott Brown claims in his new autobiography that he received a full 4 yr. athletic scholarship to Tufts. As a DIII program I was under the impression that Tufts did not give athletic scholarships. Is this revisionist history by Brown or did Tufts actually provide athletic scholarships in the late 70s and early 80s?

Good question. From his interviews about his childhood, it is possible that he got need-based aid.

except that it is being widely reported as an athletic scholarship, including on 60 minutes.

A guess based on almost no knowledge.

Tufts once played D1 basketball (played NYU and Kentucky in the 1945 tourney). Division 3 didn’t get up and running until the seventies. And though NESCAC was formed in 1971, Tufts and some other (all?) NESCAC schools competed in the ECAC for basketball during the time Scott Brown was in college.

My guess is that Tufts hadn’t entirely phased out basketball scholarships until the eighties.

Another possibility is that Senator Brown is not entirely clear about what kind of aid he received. He may sincerely believe he got an athletic scholarship when in fact he got need-based aid or some mix of the two.

Angry Dad, FTW. Division 3 is a newer thing than most people realize.
