Send non-academic recommendation letter?

I know that there's probably a thread which explains this, but I just can't find one that answers it specifically and I just don't have the time to dig and dig.

Basically, if I were to apply to, say, Northwestern, and wanted to submit a letter of recommendation from my "boss" for a volunteer endeavor, how would I go about doing that?

I know that I'll have to mail it in rather than do it online like my 2 teacher recommendations, but how does that work? Is there a form I need to print out, or do I just give the person who's doing the recommendation an addressed package with the address of the Northwestern admissions office?

Thank you so much for the help!

I would give him a Teacher Rec form to send in with the recommendation. Just strike out Teacher at the top, and write in “additional”, or something like that. Have him fill in what is applicable (name, address, what context has he known you, etc.). The form will help match the recommendation to your file.

Okay thanks!
Can anyone who has done this before shed some light on this as well?
Thank you!

Anyone else? I really need help with what to do!

OMG I’ve been wondering the same thing, your thread inspired me to do some research. From what I read online, it recommended them to send the recommendation straight to the admissions office, but from what I heard at college information sessions they said to just put it in the “additional information” section in the common app. But that would take away the privacy of the recommender’s letter so…
I would say the best bet is to just email the college you’re applying to’s admissions office, tell them your dilemma, and wait for them to respond.
Good luck!

Which is why you give them the Teach Rec form. That form has your common app info on it, and the College can more easily match the letter to your file. Otherwise, another John Smith may benefit from your hard earned recommendation.

I had to do the same thing, except instead of the leader of my volunteer group I had a research mentor send in an additional recommendation. I think it’s fine if you just ask him to write a letter to the college about you and send it in by snail-mail. That’s what I’m doing.

Is it possible to have a business professional write a rec as a teacher rec?

I think so? I’m still pretty confused and unsure of what to do. Ahh.

I would have the recommender reference your common app id at the top of the letter then they can easily match it up.
