Send your No's early!

Quick reminder to all of those kiddos and parents sitting on letters. If you know a school is a no, notify them now. You could help another kiddo come off wait-list before putting a deposit down on another school. I know many of us have kiddos or are a kiddo sitting on a wait-list they hope to come off of.

Yes! I am waitlisted at umich for masters in performance and it’s my top choice! I will tell others no but am waiting to hear from smtd-even if a no.

I agree. My son benefited when a student declined to join the studio/school very early four years ago when he was applying for BM. This time applying to only two schools for MM, he has declined the school/studio he wasn’t going to attend even before he was given a financial offer. He knew for sure where he wanted to go and also had an offere he could not turn down from the school of his choice. He has seen too many times that one space, little extra money make difference for students and also the schools. Please be considerate of other students waiting to hear and notify the the schools as soon as you can.

Ironically enough, it’s UMich that’s holding up my S’s decisions. No merit or FA award announcements as yet.

We just received finaid info from UM early this morning. I got an email because my S is already a student there and has an account where we are allowed to see his account info. So ScreenName48105 your S may have info today or soon. We are still waiting for info from IU.

Thanks for this, @classicalpercmom ! We’re waiting for one waitlist decision that would probably seal the deal on decisions if my son gets off of the list. I’ve been wondering how many people are actually considerate enough to decline at schools they don’t plan to attend as soon as they know.

We have no FA from Michigan either. Called there this morning and while wolverine access portal had shown the FA application as complete, the live person in FA office said they were lacking a critical piece of info to complete FA analysis! Once we fax that in it will take three days for offer to come through. So I would suggest calling anywhere others have info and you don’t just to check so there isn’t an unknown problem!

What? That’s crazy @songbirdmama !! Ugh.

I can’t speak for others but my D did do her declines after her acceptance was sent in. So early April. The problem is that she held on to all as she (we) looked at the offers. And some offers didn’t come until 6:30 pm on 4/1. With incomplete info, she sat on everything. And we didn’t do a last trip to 1, 2 or 3 schools which would have delayed things more. So I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you could come off a waitlist tomorrow (!) or in early May or in…June. That was the last one I heard about from a friend.

Yes, very understandable. I’m in masters program so this will all be over by April 15. My #2 school is a full scholarship but they know I’m waiting on my #1 (mich)-I’ve declined my other offers already so hopefully helping others out.

Waitlists have a domino effect. It’s painful to be on a waitlist, but the persons holding the acceptances have every right to keep them until they are required to answer. Often, those holding the acceptances that might be turned down are also on waitlists. There will be a lot more movement after April 15 for grad and April 30 for undergrad.

Possibly not by April 15. People do wait until the last minute to decide. As said above, you could see a good amt of movement in late April…even some in May. Good luck!!!

Students in the Masters programs have to except April 15 at the latest

Yes, you are absolutely correct about the deadline.

My point was that people CAN & DO come off the waitlist AFTER 4/15. My D was not waitlisted for Grad. But for UG (deadline 5/1) she was. My D got a call in mid-May with an offer from a school that waitlisted her. She had already accepted (and pd the deposit) at another school (bc she had to by 5/1). So, she had the opportunity to accept at her waitlist school in mid-May…and lose her deposit at the other school. So that is the “domino effect”, if she had done that in mid-May it would have possibly opened a spot at the other school in mid-May - putting them on the phone to waitlisted student (unless they had a higher yield than expected). Thankfully the WL school was not high on her list so she simply declined when they call…and I’m sure they were on the phone to the next student.

I hope that’s more clear or what you were asking!! I just wanted you to know that if you don’t hear from your WL school by 4/15 it doesn’t mean you never will. There’s still a chance but I think you would be within your rights to call a little before 4/15 or even now and ask where you are on the list. Sometimes they’ll let you know and sometimes not really.

Oh I see! Thank u so much for that info. My (potential) teacher did contact me right away about the waitlist, so i feel pretty comfortable to ask her about what’s going on at some point in the near future. I have read not to stalk the Dept. I haven’t heard anything today but after reading all the threads I can , I see that others may not accept until the 15th. I thought if all openings have accepted by today, I would hear a no today.

Yes! If you have had communication with teacher that you are definitely interested great. As 4/15 looms and you need to do a deposit elsewhere (and potentially lose it - that’s part of the game errr process), I think it’s fine to check in with the teacher…as money is involved. They’ll understand. But you may need to make a deposit late-ish (and others are probably WL at that school!!) to secure a spot and hope for the best after 4/15. Still I hope you are lucky and hear very soon!

Here’s an interesting blog article that showed up in my inbox today about wait list admissions. Not sure how much of this applies to music school waiting lists, but it’s certainly an interesting read. The gentleman who writes this blog is a college admissions “insider.” He was director of admissions at a private selective school for years before starting this college planning consulting business. Just thought I’d share…

Schools vary in how many they put on the waitlist. When my D applied to UMich 3 years ago, they told her that the waitlist was very small, and if you get on it, there’s a good chance you’ll get off it (not a guarantee by any means, but easier to get off than at some schools). Long story short, she was waitlisted, and sure enough, around 4/29 she received a call from UMich, offering her a spot. We were literally JUST about to pay the deposit at another school - luckily we didn’t - and she very happily accepted the spot. Three years later, she’s still a VP major at UMich. So, thank you to those of you who send your “no’s” in early - and for anyone on a waitlist, don’t lose hope!!

And the schools themselves slow the process when they issue the acceptance but delay the aid/merit offer.

That creates the domino effect of the student sitting on acceptances waiting for the last piece of the puzzle - so they can make their decision, (and then decline the other schools or negotiate their final deal at their top choice).

Thank you so much for those examples of being called off waitlist. And I was told I was on a very short waitlist by my potential teacher.
