Sending SAT Math 2 scores for 9th grader?

I just registered my son to take the SAT Math 2 exam in December and he can send 4 free reports to colleges/scholarships. Is there any reason to send the scores for a 9th grader? It would be much better if he could delay sending the 4 free scores until 11th or 12th grade. Is it possible to delay it or better to not send/send?

Thanks

Not that I can see. Older scores will be included on score reports sent later, so personally, unless there’s some earlier scholarship deadlines, I would wait until whenever his last SAT or Subject Test is.

From your past posting history, I see that your son is taking calculus. So I’m including that info here to (hopefully) head off any responses asking why he’s taking a Subject Test as a freshman. Good luck to him.

If he is confident he’ll do well and you have some schools in mind that need the subject tests you could send it to those to save a bit of money even if the college choices change. Of course sending scores before you know them is a bit of a gamble.

Don’t send now. Wait until the start of 12th grade. The subject tests and regular SAT are sent together when you order them sent then. And you can choose which ones to send (omit any lesser ones) for most colleges.

You don’t get to keep those free score sends, though. You get 4 free each time, so you could send 4 free for the last SAT test of either type he takes.

Will he have finished Precalculus by December?

Don’t send any results. With these early tests don’t send any results either to the high school or the university. Jut peruse them yourself first.

He is taking Calc AB now (his school does a one year version with Adv Calc then Calc AB one year, then Calc BC in the spring of the next year), although the teacher indicated this week that he might put him directly into BC this spring semester. He has already worked through the AOPS Calc book during independent study in 8th grade and we requested to put him directly into Calc BC but teacher did not recommend it initially. He should do very well on the Math 2 test so I am not worried about sending the score, I just would prefer to wait as he has no idea re colleges at this stage.

@Ynotgo do I understand you correctly that we do not get to pause the 4 free sends? So if we choose not to send now, those are lost forever, but when he takes the SAT or another subject test we can pick and choose what to send at that time and we would get 4 free? Thanks very much, I did look for the answer on the college board website but did not find it.

I would not submit any score from 9th grade unless you are not going to take SAT or SAT2 again before high school graduation. The score reports are cumulative. Submitting great score early is fine as it has no adverse effect and my demonstrate interest for some schools.

@yearstogo Yes, that is correct. You loose those 4 free sends but you get 4 more for other subject tests or the SAT when he takes it and those I’m pretty sure (maybe someone can confirm) send all the SAT/SAT II scores up to that point (with no opportunity for score choice).

Thanks very much!!

Confirmed, as I mentioned upthread.
