Senior Awards Ceremony

Whoa! What about the little cheer I made up and YOU said I was the winner of some of them there cookies! :D

Hmmmmm, sounds like selective memory loss to me! ;)

wvdad..you mean I FORGOT about you??? Well then - forgive me. I probably won't be making cookies till next weekend ( I made 500 yesterday and they're ready to be shipped to 1 mid, 1 Iraqi soldier and 1 Iraqi Chaplain)...but I promise you some next weekend. Whattya want? chocolate chip or oatmeal or brownies????

Decisions, decisions! Hey, beggars can't be choosers! But........

I AM partial to oatmeal. :D

Never been a big choclate chip cookie fan. Mom use to make me "chipless" choclate chippers! (is that an oxymoron?) I know, I've always been a little off bubble.

By the way HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY EVERYONE! :D

Hope you all had a fantastic day!

good thing I have all your contact info....OK, before the end of the month expect a box for all your family :-)

With or without the cookies..... love ya, mean it!

Hey, just to let you know, Sierra finally got a letter of congrats from our congressman. She also heard from the WV USNA Alumni chapter and are trying to arrange a luncheon for the six from our state that are going to the Academy.

I'm going to speak with her Senior Naval Science Instructor tomorrow about the "check" during award ceremony. That really sounds like a neat idea.

Here's some food for thought guys. If the schools have not done so already, please do contact your local newspaper about your kid's appointment. I used to be a reporter and we were always looking for great stuff like this to run personal stories on. You can contact the academies and ask that they send you a press release that they use for just this purpose or contact the paper directly. In my son's case, the assigned reporter chose not to use the press release but to do an article instead. An Academy staff person told us that they love to get the free PR & wanted a copy. Supreme scrap book stuff after your kid gets over being mad at you. :)

ASK YOUR KID FIRST!

Some may not want the attention.

Since our kiddo is in Civil Air Patrol not only will be have a senior awards ceremony at our high school where she will officially receive her Appointment from her BGO - but at the banquet at CAP in June - a senior military officer will present it there too. Then we learned she is going to get some other military award that the regional BGO told our local BGO about - probably at some Naval event coming up. Don't know what on earth that's all about - but this mom is humbled by all of this.

The truth is, come the first minute of I-Day - not one shiny trophy, fancy certificate, pretty medal or big appointment package will matter one iota!!!!

Yep. And ask your kid first like Zap said. Some kids on here have said they don't want the attention. But if your school, ect. does nothing special & you think your kid would like it, its nice to have the clipping for a keepsake.

You people all listen to JM as she used to be a reporter for the Daily Blab in Punxatawny, PA!! :D

BTW how did she get 500 posts ahead of me? Must be all those chocolate and merlot advices.

You betcha. And most of my good stuff could be found in the Help Wanted sections! The only ones in the country with By lines. LOL They paid me in chocolates & merlot. Thats how the whole thing got started. I got 500 more posts than you Boss cause ~ I win!! :)

Two more months till the Eagle lands (docks) down here!! I'm gonna steal me a Coastie! I'll be the one on the dock waiting with a t-shirt that says "Coastie Cyber Mom"

Hey y'all - don't feel too badly if your school doesn't have Senior Awards, or if it doesn't turn out as well as you'd like. Nothing could be as lame as what we went thru last night!

First of all, they put the Academy & ROTC awards first thing on the program (other than that, it went least to greatest $$ value), so it was a little anticlimactic. Then, the appointment was actually listed as to the "Naval Military Academy". (Sheesh!). I think the Assistant Principal mispronounced our son's last name (it's only one syllable! More like he called him by a different name!) and never said the name of the BGO in his introduction (BGO made a nice presentation - but very brief compared to the other folks presenting $500. awards! haha!) We appreciated him being there.

Even tho' our son didn't want a big deal made, it was rather strange that there was so much more applause & appreciation for the ROTC scholarships & in-state stuff. (Here is where I was going to credit the earlier post about the two types of people - "those that don't know what we're doing and those that don't know why we're doing it", but I couldn't find that post - it's here on CC somewhere! Great quote - and apparently true, even in this military town! Unfortunately!).

As I said, it wasn't important to our son to have the recognition, but they could've at least gotten the facts straight! (I guess it's good for a chuckle anyway!).

Oh well...he is so "already gone" and looking forward to getting to USNA. I bet they "get it right" most of the time! (Let's hope!).

Have a JOYFUL day, y'all!

Wednesday will be an interesting day for dd. She can't have her Appointment handed to her at the school ceremony, as she is homeschooledl. However, she WILL be doing the music as her senior public schooled friends asked her to. Seems they are miffed at the principal over the entire thing! It will be tough for her to see the girl headed to AFA get hers, but the upside is that she'll get to see her ALO again--he's a great guy...

Mine was presented today. Unlike a previous post, I was last in the scholarship section which was in no particular order. My BGO is an incredible lady but a little...corny. Some people were chuckling until she said it was worth over $275,000, that got them quiet. BGO did do a nice job though, countless people I've never seen came up to me throughout the day.

My daughter just informed me that the school does some sort of awards something. She knows nothing about it except that you have to be invited. Graduation is a month from today and we haven't seen/heard anything, so I am guessing she is not to be included in whatever it is. Kind of sucky, I think. Sheesh! The kid is an All-American swimmer, honor student, student council, and an appointee to Annapolis! What more does she have to do?

Sorry for whining. This is the only safe place for me to vent. I don't want my daughter or hubby to hear me complaining.

Thanks for listening! I feel better now.

Hey beachmom - call the Academy. They will send a press release to your local paper or give it to you for submission. Hey, this IS a big deal. These kids have EARNED their appointments and I know WE are ALL very, very proud of each one!

GO NAVY! :D

Beachmom, call your principal and ask about including your daughter in the awards ceremony.

Our BGO suggested this to our NAPster-to-be son and his plebe-to-be classmate, and the school was only too happy to have our BGO present awards to them. It just hadn't occured to the event organizers, because SA kids aren't common at our school.

I have to add: We feel absolutely blessed to have an exceptional BGO, Mike Walker -- an energetic, determined and thoughtful USNA father, and an example of the caliber of people who make this whole system work.

beachmom -

My son's graduation is June 15th and the High School's award night is scheduled for June 5th. He is supposed to receive recognition at this event according to our Congressional Rep. but we have not yet received any info or invite as of yet... I think it will come as we get a little closer to the date.

You may not have heard anything yet simply because they have'nt sent anything out on it yet. Maybe you can call the school, perhaps your daughter's counselor, and ask about it. I am sure they will recognize a student with all those wonderful achievements!

Good luck!

man, I just have to say something. Whoever said that it's rediculous that the navy has a big presentation for their new members at the senior awards night is just missing the point. Like, that blows my mind....Why the heck not give them a big ceremony/congratulations deal? Is the kid that achieved the 2400 or the kid going to Harvard/Yale, etc. going to fight for their country some day? Probably not. Is that kid that scored the 2400 going to a great school for a noble cause? Probably not, he/she is probably just going for selfish reasons if you get my catch. Anyone willing to put their life on the line for our country better get their ass rewarded..

my 3 cents
