Senior Block or Free Period

Hi,
At my school, they offer seniors the option to take senior block or free period. Since my high school runs on block scheduling, I would have 3 classes compared to 4 in the spring semester. I am trying to get into competitive colleges so I don’t know if senior block would affect that if I am taking a challenging course load. I will be taking about 5-6 AP or college level courses for my senior year. I want to try to have a little break in the spring and maybe focus time on internships or volunteering more. Do you think I should take senior block?

Taking a free period is fine but in case of block scheduling, having two free periods and only taking 3 courses at a time may not look good, specially if others are taking more.

However, do what you prefer and don’t live for approval of college adcoms, you can do everything right and they may still randomly pick someone because he is from a favored prep school or resident of an obscure town.

Could you also take a fun class like cooking or photography?

What do you call ‘senior block’ and how is it different from ‘free period’?
What other classes will you be taking first and second semester?
