Is it bad to take free period in senior year?

Is it bad to take a free period during your senior year if you want to get into a UC college?

In my senior year, I'm only doing 2 AP's. Is that bad?

This is hard to answer without knowing your full coarse-load and the schools schedule (e.g. in my school basically everybody has a free period. It doesn’t hurt any college chances).

Yeah I agree, it depends on your school. I mean at my school, most seniors have 3 free periods, but they sometimes only do take 2 APs (which is a weak schedule at my school). So what are your other stats?

I don’t think a free period matters. OTOH, to my ears, 2 APs sounds like a weak schedule.

But it really does depend on your school. At my school, almost everyone has a free period, at least for one semester, every year. At other schools, as far as I’ve read on here, only slackers have them. At my school, which has almost every AP, 2 APs make for a pretty average junior or senior schedule and is only good if someone’s a sophomore. At a school with 5 APs, 2 APs might a great schedule make.

It depends on what classes you took earlier in high school, but I don’t think it matters much. A friend of mine took 3 free periods (out of 8 available periods) for his senior year and got accepted into Chicago. He had taken 8 or 9 APs and a few “post-AP” math classes, though.

When you say “at a school with 5 ap’s” do you mean the number of AP’s they offer? If so I think my school offers at least 25.

If I take 2 AP’s my senior year, it would be 7 AP’s in total.

At my school, all of the top twenty or so kids take study halls every year. It helps to boost your GPA by giving it one less credit for it to be taken out so. So basically, getting into top ten at my school is a numbers game. So just do whatever you feel like you can handle.

no, just have a strong courseload, otherwise.

two APs? does your school offer lots of APs or no? at my school, two AP classes is quite formidable, but i know at many schools it’s barely anything.

the significance of a free period also depends on the school. at my school, free periods are mostly for slackers and will significantly hurt your class rank (i technically have free periods, but i’m getting credit). therefore, taking a free period would not be a good idea here.

I have three offperiods out of 9 periods in the schoolday and I’m still in 5 AP classes and applied to Ivies + other top schools, so take some periods off =]

I took a period off for one semester because I couldn’t fit anything in. But I’m taking a loaded schedule, so it didn’t really affect me in terms of college decisions.
