Does being the President of my senior class carry some weight with colleges or is it looked at as common and not of much importance?

Well it's a leadership position. Could it really hurt?

no its definitely looks really good on an app.

it looks just as good as any other basic school leadership position. SC president, team captain, founder/president. But probably less so then being NHS president, Amnesty International president or some of the stronger ECs

tyler09, just curious, why would AI be better than SGA? Is it because its a part of a national organization?

Most colleges would consider senior class president an excellent EC, and would rank it ahead of a school club presidency including the presidency of the school's NHS chapter.

What makes class president especially impressive is that the student is the top officer for an entire class.

When it comes to places like HPYS, however, being class president won't make one stand out in the application pool because so many class presidents apply. To stand out for holding an office, one would have to be a national officer of have done something exceptional as a school or class officer. An example of something exceptional would be creating a schoolwide project such as building a Habitat for Humanity house.

When it comes to places like HPYS, what impresses them is what one does with an office, not the fact that one has a title.

Thanks for all the input! I'm not applying to HYP or any ivies/top 20 schools.

i dunno, maybe thats the case at private schools.

at public schools its just a group of kids who dont really do much and the entire school doesn't even get to vote.

It might just be the context.

No matter how BS student leadership might be at your school or any school in the nation, for some reason, every college looks at it as a huge responsibility.
