Senior course selections

So, my class was recently called in to do their course selections for the next year. I blissfully signed my soul away to 3 AP classes and a course at the local community college. However, I was a bit more skeptical on what to do for my electives. Another year of Independent Study Computer Science (as opposed to a VB6 course) is the only thing definite at the moment.

The remaining choices consist of Spanish IV, Band, or an empty period. Currently I'm leaning towards something and the empty period. (Taking a full 7-period schedule requires me to get up at 5:30 a.m.. My late-night internet-browsing habits do not agree with this, and I would like to enjoy a school day where I do not collapse in one class or another.) As far as the other two courses go, I have taken Spanish since freshman year in highschool. I'm not particularly interested in it, nor does it really relate to my preferred major (CS.) However, my guidance department is adamant that anyone who wants even the slightest chance at a highly-competitive university (the sort which I intend to apply to) MUST take at least four years of some foreign language. I get the feeling that the guidance people are being a bit overzealous in this respect, but I have no real way of knowing.

On the other hand, I have been involved in Band since 5th grade (4th if you count my one year of Orchestra.) Unfortunately, my interest in band has declined as of late (in part due to my teacher) and I'm not too thrilled about continuing it. However, I would think that colleges would be more annoyed if I dropped band than if I dropped Spanish.

What do you guys think? Is it better for me to continue band or Spanish? (Note: if I do not take Spanish, I will probably take German I.) Or is it really imperative that I take both?

I would definitely take band...senior year is the worst time to drop your committment to anything. If you are looking at primarily tech schools for CS, then I wouldn't worry too much about the Spanish. I have heard that colleges prefer that you stick with one language, so I guess I would recommend both.

There is really no point in switching to German at this point. Take either band or Spanish, or some other interesting elective that your school offers. (Side note, I only took 2 years of Spanish and one of Latin (forced), and got into "a highly-competitive university.")
