Hi all, I’m currently applying for junior transfer, but I’m just curious about how/if a senior level transfer would even be possible. I know they have a cap of 60 semester credits give or take, so could you elect to apply as a spring semester junior and just not have your credits answered? Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, just a hypothetical as I’ve been worried about a backup plan if I can’t transfer this year haha
@Gumbymom can help!
Basically for UCs:
- Lower division (frosh/soph level courses) non-UC credit is capped at 70 semester units, but all courses taken count for subject credit (e.g. fulfilling general education and major preparation requirements).
- Upper division (junior/senior level courses) and UC credit is added to the capped lower division credit to get total transferable credit.
- If you are a senior (the above total is 90 or more semester units) or (for some campuses) a high unit junior (threshold varies by campus, usually 80-89 semester units), then some campuses may not admit, or be less willing to admit.
You cannot have your college credit ignored; all college credit from all colleges attended must be included in your application.
So technically yes but unlikely? Which campuses would you say would be most willing to do so?
The linked document shows which campuses may admit high unit juniors and/or seniors and which do not at all.
How much upper division and UC credit will you have? If you have only lower division non-UC credit, then you will not be in danger of these credit limitations for admission (but will transfer in with at most 70 semester units of lower division credit).
This isn’t about me haha this is just a hypothetical in case I don’t get in anywhere this year. however, if this were to happen, I’m not sure how to distinguish lower div vs higher div credit, but I’d assume it’s about an even 50/50 split and I’d have about 85 credits? however I go to an OOS 4-year, so it’s not like they’d all transfer anyway
Lower division courses are frosh / soph level courses, while upper division courses are junior/senior level courses. All community college courses are lower division. Four year schools usually have a course numbering system that classifies courses as lower / upper division or frosh / soph / junior / senior level.
From that, you should be able to tell which courses are lower or upper division and how many units of each you have.
It looks like @ucbalumnus has answered the question and given you some good information. Hopefully you have applied to a wide range of schools so a Senior level transfer will be moot.
Thanks! I suppose by that caliber I’d have lower division classes with a few upper div.
I applied to JMU, Humboldt, UCI, UCSD, UCSC, emory, and vanderbilt as a CA resident with a 3.73 in Psych, so we’ll have to see. I think it’s a rather broad range, from 85%ish-20%ish
