I have had some scheduling problems with my senior year. I am currently enrolled in APES, AP Calc BC (block class), AP Lit, gov/econ (required), and Spanish 4 (no AP offered). This leaves one period open in my schedule. I am worried about colleges not thinking I have enough APs (although my school does not offer that many). The choices I have left are AP Chem (first year at my school, I have virtually no chem background due to the fact that I had 3 different teachers my sophomore year), AP Physics (I am not a STEM person at all and I have the teacher for two hours later in the day; she is notoriously difficult), and AP Euro (I love history, but the class is very intensive and only sophomores take it due to the fact that they have no other APs; the teacher’s pass rate is not that good). I also could peer mentor with the life skills students that period instead (I would really enjoy this), but I am not sure if colleges would rather we take a challenging course. Additionally, I am looking into independently studying APHUG, AP macro/micro, or AP gov (this is where my interest lies, but my school does not offer these courses). I am at a loss for what to choose and my counselors are no help. What is the best choice for my upcoming college applications
I would say do the mentoring period. You said you would enjoy it, it could stand out on an application, and you already have 5 APs, I think that’s enough
Seriously, you also have to think about college applications. Make sure you’ll have enough time for the essays and everything.
Also, its your senior year. That doesn’t mean you should slack off or anything, but allow yourself to enjoy it!
One last thing, you did not mention any extracurriculars. Take those into account as well.
Thank you so much for the advice!
You stated that your school doesn’t offer many APs. Colleges receive stats from highschools and know how many APs that school offers, so if you don’t have many APs because they’re not available they won’t hold it against you. Is there a way you could take AP Gov online? Or AP Macro? they’re requirements but they’re also fairly simple courses as long as you study and keep up with it. I would avoid AP Chem/ Physics if STEM isn’t your strong suit because those are some of the hardest Science APs and last thing you need is to do poorly your senior year.
