These are the courses I picked for my senior year schedule
English 12 Honors ( There no AP Lit next year)
AP Psychology
AP Government/politics
Web Design Advanced Studies (2 periods mandatory class. I go to a tech school and this is my major.)
Algebra 2 ( not sure about honors. I am not too good at math.)
School related work experience ( 2 periods. I work in the cafeteria and I also get paid, )
MY CURRENT SCHEDULE:
AP English Language
AP Spanish Language
Physics Honors
Geometry Honors
Web Design 3 ( 2 periods)
US History Honors
I plan on not taking a 4th science because I am not too interested in neither one since I want to major in the business field. Also I will be taking only up to Algebra 2 because I took pre-algebra me freshman year. Do you think this would hurt my chances into going to college. Not aiming for ivy league schools.
I would say it looks pretty good, given your requirements. Is there any way you could fit in a science? I don’t think not having one would negatively affect you necessarily (especially not if your counselor wrote a letter explaining your requirements), but if you can fit one in, even something like Environmental science, that would improve the rigor of your schedule. Same thing with taking Algebra II as an honors class, especially since you took Honors Geometry the year before. But overall your schedule looks good, especially with the two APs you have in there.
To graduate in my state, a 4th science is not required although it is good to have a 4th science class. The science classes that were left were AP physics ( Which I really dont want to do), AP Biology ( Dont want to do that either) and Geoscience regular or honors. I picked Geoscience but I switched it with another period of the student aide. I really dont think science would be necessary since I want to major in business although I heard it is good to have a 4th science. I was planning on taking algebra 2 Honors but everyone in my class complains that he is very strict. He is like the most strict teacher in the school that gives quizzes 3 times a day. Also when eh grades his tests, he puts 300 percent which can either bring your grade up or down, Many are failing that class and have to retake it next year again. I am afraid because math is not really my strong subject. I dont want to mess up my senior year because I want at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. My GPA is currently 2.8 with a weighted of 3.1 . I am still deciding on the algebra Honors class though. Thank you
Colleges have a different set of standards than high schools. This schedule may be sufficient to graduate, but is quite weak academically.
Having two non academic periods would be detrimental. Can you replace one with a science (geoscience honors)? And add another class? Or can you replace AP psychology with either AP World or AP European History, and add a statistics class if you don’t want to add geoscience?
Sure you’re not aiming for Ivies, but are you aiming for your state’s flagship? Are you hoping for honors college and a scholarship?
If you’re aiming for a 4-year college and business major, that schedule won’t do.
At the very least, I STRONGLY recommend you take Algebra 2H.
For business, you’ll need pre-calculus and calculus, as well as statistics. Without the foundation from Algebra 2H you may never get to your major.
Sorry for the late reply. I really wanted to take statistics but my high school inst offering Statistics this upcoming year anymore. I know Geoscience is good but I just feel like it is one of those earth 7th grade classes which would be boring. I am not aiming for Ivy leagues but I plan to study in Mexico . Is getting up to Algebra 2 really bad?
Algebra 2H is very basic. No one at a top 50 university stopped at Algebra2 - this is more frequent at a directional university and rare at a flagship. You’ll be at a big disadvantage and may not be able to pursue the major you want if you don’t get to college with Algebra 2H (and, ideally, Precalculus/Precalculus H).
If you don’t think you can get a B/B- in Algebra 2H, take Algebra 2, but revisit your idea of majoring in Business.
By definition, Geoscience Honors will NOT be a repeat of middle school. It’s a high school class AND Honors.
If you don’t want to take Geoscience, can you take any class via dual enrollment? Your state’s virtual HS? FLVS? What about AP CS A or AP CS Principles?
If not, can you take any honors class?
You should NOT use two academic periods for non academic purpose. Even if you’re not aiming for top schools but one of your state universities, you need to show some aptitude and interest in learning. Taking two non-academic periods will show the opposite.
How is mathematics useful for business? I know that some coleges have business math calculus type class but it ia not really necessary for a real job. Maybe I will just take 1 period of the aide and pick another class. I would of picked AP statistics if my school offerred it but they dont. The next classes they offer are - precalculus ab H , AP calculus , college preparatory mathematics and math of personal finance? What about if I do math of personal finance? Isnt that a business math that would look good for college especially since I want to major in the business field?
Actually ALL business majors must take one class in calculus or applied calculus, and one class in statistics. At some universities, some of your economics classes will be based on calculus (micro and macro will be required at a minimum).
Math is not taught because it’s practical (ie., used in every day professional life) but because it’s useful (ie., it trains your brain in a certain way and teaches your brain skills it needs to function well in business - seeing patterns, finding solutions to problems, creating models from a principle and applying the model to different objects). It also works as a gatekeeper - you need to have mastered certain fields to be able to join a selective or desirable major.
Not all universities are math-intensive for their business majors but all that are AACSB accredited and most others will require calculus and statistics. To take calculus, you’ll need precalculus/college algebra freshman year, and to place into that you’ll need to have as strong a background in algebra as you can.
Since you don’t have Algebra 2, that’s what you should take, and I strongly advise you try and take Algebra 2H. Ask your guidance counselor and your math teacher if they think you could handle Algebra 2H with a B- at least. If not, then take Algebra 2 “regular”.
Math for personal finance is NOT related to business and it does NOT prepare you for college math. “personal finance” means “how to calculate variable APR”, “how to handle your checking account”, “how does your mortgage work”…
Take honors algebra 2, it will help prepare you for college math, which will be worlds harder than regular math.
I’m not sure where you’re aiming to go to school, but a lot of colleges want to see four years of science also.
Does that mean to get into international business I need to have taken at least pre-calc. If I didnt then I wont be able to get in international business?
You won’t need pre calc as a prerequisite necessarily, but you’ll have to take it in college at some point. If you could take it in high school, that would be good because it will be easier and you won’t have to pay.
I would take algebra 2 and precalc together but my school doesnt let me since you need algebra 2. What should I expect in algebra 2 H? Does it have any relation to Geometry?
I guess I will stick with algebra 2 honors since I took Geometry honors and Physics Honors. I am just scared because I heard that the teacher is reslly stricy and all these students failing. I start getting paranoid thinking im going to fail because I am not good at math and it will be my senior year which would be devastating. I get all these things in my head when people start talking.
Tomorrow, go see your GC and ask whether you’ll be allowed to switch out of Algebra 2H if you find out it’s too difficult for you; Say you want to try for the challenge, but you’re also aware you’re not very good at math and may not be able to make it, so you need to know whether you’ll b able to switch to Algebra 2 and until what date the switch is allowed.
