Senior Year Grades

Hey guys.
I was wondering how important senior years grades were for RD to top-tier schools. (My first choice is Dartmouth)

I attend a very competitive high school in new york.
I think my senior year average will be 85 UW/90 W with 4 APs.
My overall average (on the transcript already sent to colleges without these grades) is 92 UW so it is a -huge- drop (most of my peers' averages range from 88-95~, no 4.0s/100s etc.)

However, my mom has been extremely ill this entire semester and is soon getting major surgery. We thought it was something worse (cancer for a while; thank god it's not) so I couldn't concentrate on my work at all and was frequently absent. It was hard to catch up in school, and my college mentor knows this -- she'll be writing this on the Midyear Reports.
(I hate using my mom as an excuse, but I just hope she gets better regardless of college decisions. she is more important than whichever college i attend in the fall.)

Is there any chance I could still be admitted?

Thanks.

Hi Eddiee,

Happy new year to you. I hope that your mom is feeling better. Yes the school will evaluate your midyear report. Any slump in your grades should be documented by you GC as a separate letter with her evaluation, midyear report and the transcript.

Part of the problem lies in as you already know, you attend an extremely competitive high school and they are part of the overall pool that you are going to be evaluated against along with the students from your peer schools. I know that April is a long way off and right now the only thing you can do is to let the process play it self out.

I always thought midyear reports didn't really factor into the actual decision, they were just there to make sure you kept up your work, but i could be wrong...

midyear reports are extremely important in the admissions process because it gives the admissions committee a fuller look at how you have performed over 7 terms vs 6

huh, i didn't know that! I guess I'll have to start working a little harder ;)

Do any colleges check end of the year grades, by the way?

Yes they do because your admission is contigent upon your successfully completing high school with pretty much the same level of performance you had when you got admitted. A mahor case of senioritis can cause the school to rescind your admission, if you got merit money based on GPA you risk losing it and some school let you start out on academic probation limiting the number of types of courses you can take.
