Hey everyone,

So I applied RD to Northwestern, my unweighted GPA before Senior year was a 90 with a STRONG upward trend. However I just got my 1st semester grades and I got straight A's except for AP Gov and AP Calc AB, will this ruin my chances? I am mad because I held A's all semester in those classes and ended up with 89% after finals but those teachers refused to bump the grades! NU was a reach for me in the first place, are my chances shot now?

Emma,
It is REALLY difficult to get accepted to NU. I’m sure you know how competitive it has become. Of course, they are looking for an upward trend in grades, and certainly so during senior year. I’m sure you’ve looked at the GPA stats of those who’ve been accepted. The university is a reach for so many students! Just do your absolute best going forward and see what happens come acceptance time. Good luck!

NU is a reach for everyone, so this is already a long shot. But those grades don’t knock you out, especially if you are at a really good school. If you have a hard schedule (took the top available to you) and you go to a good school, I don’t see this hurting you too much, but if either of those conditions aren’t fulfilled then it might be dragging you down a little bit.

A little note; teachers refused to bump the grade because you didn’t earn the higher grade according to them. They won’t just bump up your grade because you ask.

I am in all AP classes and in the top 10% of my grade so that’s the good part I guess! Crimsonstained, I know not to expect this as it certainly is rare in college, but one of the teachers had me for math for 3 years and the other bumped someone else with a lower grade. I’m not mad at them for it, it just would of been nice! I was just having a complaining session Thanks for the advice everyone!

Haha, that’s fine. I just wanted to point out that you couldn’t expect that. Sounds like you have great rigor, and your grades comparatively are good. Good luck!

Hey Emma,
I think you should be fine. I mean NU takes senior grades pretty seriously, but not as seriously as they take your overall performance. NU is a difficult school to get in to; not gonna lie, they probably have already decided, and your grades for the next semester really won’t influence their decision by too much, if they’ve already decided. Best of luck, and hope to see you on campus!
