I finally decided that after high school I want to attend community college. But I was curious about how many classes I’m going to have to take senior year. So what are the required classes I will have to take senior year? I live in California so what are the requirements. How many electives do I still have to take and so on??
This is a question for your guidance counselor. Here in Illinois there are state requirements for HS graduation along with school specific ones. My DD has a summary of requirements and what she’s taken - and what’s left to take.
For California you need the following courses (year long):
- Four courses in English
- Two courses in mathematics, including one year of Algebra I
- Two courses in science, including biological and physical sciences
- Three courses in social studies, including United States history and geography; world history, culture, and geography; a one-semester course in American government and civics, and a one-semester course in economics
- One course in visual or performing arts, foreign language, or commencing with the 2012-13 school year, career technical education. For the purpose of satisfying the minimum course requirement, a course in American Sign Language shall be deemed a course in foreign language
- Two courses in physical education, unless the pupil has been exempted pursuant to the provisions of EC Section 51241
If you are looking to transfer to a Cal State, UC or a private 4 year university, then taking some AP classes can fulfill some the General Education courses/requirements needed to transfer and will save you time at your community college.
I would continue with your Senior English, Pre-calculus, Civics/American Government and then select a few electives. You will be required to take an English and Math placement test for the community college you will attend, so the more English/Math you have under your belt the better for the placement.
What do you plan to study at your CC?
im still trying to figure out what exactly i want to study. i know for sure that its going to be science as my goal in the future is to attend medical school.
Since you have already taken Biology, Chemistry and Physics, if there is some other science class of interest, I would take that for your Senior year. AP Environmental Science is not a difficult AP and it may be of interest or a Computer Science course or a Psychology course?
You can take a lighter load for Senior year, but I would still take as many courses possible that would prepare you for the eventual transfer to a 4 year university.
If you feel up for it I would take a few AP classes in subjects which interest you. You could get credit at your Comunity College and potentially graduate early.
