Sentence Completion Question Help

Freedom of expression is not necessarily a ________ force : communities that encourage it often feel less threatened by social unrest than do those in which dissent is _________

How would one go about answering this?

Answer options are :
(a) revolutionary ... promoted
(b) positive . . prohibited
(c) successful . . protested
(d) divisive . . restricted
(e) militant . . fostered

THanks in advance!

Probably B, the sentence is refuting a common notion of freedom of expression being a (good) force. Then you’re contrasting encourage with a word that’s its antonym in the second part, so prohibited.

I thought the same thing panda, but its actually D :((((( I went with the opposites + first and then - second blank but it didn’t work.

How is the answer D? This question baffled me I thought it was B

It’s quite obvious. The key word here is “less.”

If it was B, you’d have the first phrase saying freedom of expression is not positive, and the second sentence explaining how FoE is positive.

I’ll simplify things:

Freedom of expression doesn’t always cause internal strife: communities that encourage it often feel less threatened by social unrest than do those in which there is no freedom of expression.

It’s D. It’s saying that communities that allow freedom of speech actually run more smoothly. I remember this question from a practice test I did lol.
