Hi all,

My parents are legally married but physically separated. My father works in the US and pays taxes there, while my mother works here and pays Canadian taxes.

How do I get around this in the CSS Profile? When I select "Married" as the marital status, I can only enter one address (they automatically assume my parents live together). Should I select "Separated?" (But they're not legally separated)

What should I do?

Thanks !

Are they separated as in the marriage is over but they haven’t got round to getting a divorce (or don’t believe in divorce or whatever)? If so put separated. Or are they merely living separately because of job commitments etc? If so put married.

I could be wrong but I think separated describes your situation while divorced is similar but legally finalized.

Thanks for the speedy responses!

They’re separated for business reasons (my dad HAS to work in the US)… and have no intention of divorce.

The problem with putting ‘married’ is that CSS doesn’t let me discuss two separate addresses… so I can’t report everything (my mom pays canadian taxes and my dad pays american)

I would not consider them to be separated then.

but swimcatsmom, how can I report the two different tax info (2 diff countries)? Do I try to guess and combine them?

Which is their “primary residence”? Do they own a home which they declare as their “primary residence”? If so, that sounds like that would be their residence.
