September 1 of Junior Year

So, supposedly September 1 of Junior year is a big day in recruiting, but some things I read say that coaches will be able to email camp and clinic information. I feel like that has been happening for a while. Are they FINALLY allowed to respond to an email or a phone call after September 1? It would be really nice knowing if schools have already filled their recruiting classes, so that dd could scratch them off the list.

What is your experience with the Sept 1 of Junior year date? Thanks!

Go to the NCAA website and look at the recruiting timeline for your sport and the division in which you plan to participate. Rules are more relaxed for D3. Then you have to look up definitions for “dead period”, “quiet period” and “no contact period.” Frankly it can be confusing even after looking everything up. However, here is where you should start:

Today is the ‘opening day’ for lacrosse since the changes went in last spring. This year it is a non-even since many of the top recruited had committed before the rule change. Next year will be a mixed bag because some had even committed that early, as freshmen.

In future years, it will be the first day to commit, but who will commit never having discussed playing with the coaches? The coaches will have lists of who they want, kids they’ve seen at camps and tournaments, kids whose siblings have played for that coach. Lacrosse is different (now) because there is to be NO contact about recruiting before 9/1/junior year. Other sports allow contact about recruiting in different ways like the coach can answer a call or talk to a hs or club coach. Sept 1 is not a shotgun start in all sports.

you mean Lacrosse is going from totally open recruiting to virtually NONE?? Wow, I figured they would just have to fall in line with the rules across other sports, but that seems harsh. They can’t even get clinic info??

For lacrosse, there is no recruiting before Sept 1 of junior year. The coaches and colleges can hold camps, coaches can scout at tournaments, students can tour schools, but NO contact between coaches and athletes, their parents, their high school or club coaches about playing for that school. If the player attends a camp, the coach can talk about drills and skill sets, but can’t say “Here at State U, we’re looking for middies with speed, and you’d be perfect.” He can say ‘you are a middie with speed but you’d be faster if you xxx.’ Coaching allowed, recruiting is not. On a tour of the school, the player can’t have a separate tour of the lacrosse locker room or have lunch with the coach.

All this is new and just went into effect in April. Most of the top players were already committed for this class of juniors so as of today the coaches are just reconnecting with the committed recruits, but the coaches couldn’t contact them all summer.

We’ll see how it works in the next few years. I do not think it will be all that different except for the parents who can’t wait to get that commitment. I think the kids who were headed for Syracuse will still go there and the mid-level kids will still have to wait to see where the superstars take a spot and take what is left. The D2’s and D3’s will still be picking up seniors.

these timelines are a complete joke --no one really follows them.

I think there is a bit of rule bending, but I wouldn’t say the timelines are a joke. S had a couple of coaches reply to him last summer through his high school coach, with them specifically saying they couldn’t contact S directly due to NCAA rules. He got 2 emails just after midnight Sept 1, and a few calls and texts that morning. All from coaches who had not contacted him directly prior to Sept 1.

To the original poster, my son did have a breakout summer at a couple national events so I don’t know that his Sept 1 was typical. I have talked to others who ended up becoming D1 athletes at good schools who got no love on Sept 1. But hopefully for him and for you at least now you can get a better idea of where you stand when you do make contact.
