***September 2016 ACT Discussion Thread***

Hey, I remember seeing you on the January/February SAT thread when I used to not post. I switched to the ACT and have done much better on it than the SAT!

@EF431x Hey! Were you referring to me? Hahah nice to meet you again! How did you do on the ACT compared to the SAT, if I may ask?

Wait, I’m confused— the article about math and science getting harder, is that actually true? Does this mean that using released practice tests from previous years are now invalid to use for practice? Does that mean I should buy the new edition of the red book? Or is it just opinion that isn’t supported by statements made from ACT? Math and science are my worst subjects :-/ X_X

As for studying, I do one practice subject a day and meet with a tutor once a week and we do practice in the ACT Red book.

Also, does anyone have tips to go from a 29 to a 32+? My June scores were C:29 (E:32 M:25 R:30 S:29 (got lucky with that, usually my science practice scores were always 24-25)

My goal is to get above 28 for both math and science, with the goal being to get 30s (or higher) on both of them.

@microssrunner17 I dont think that article holds much weight. I wouldnt really believe anything other than the ACT company

@microssrunner17 What practice material do you use? The red book only comes with 3 tests, unfortunately

@HopkinsHopeful Lol yeah, sorry about the confusion. On the new SAT I got a 1370 both times I took it (and when that’s converted to the score on the old SAT it was only a difference of 10 points between it and my actual score on the old SAT). On the ACT right now I have a superscore composite of a 33.

@microssrunner17 Using previously given ACTs to study is the best way to study! While the newest ACT 2016-2017 prep guide only has 3 tests, apparently they have altered the tests a bit so that the math and science reflect the changes that the article you are referring to said. Also, I don’t think it would be a good idea buying it if you’ve taken the April and June 2015 ACT because they mashed up those two tests and some new questions to make the three tests. There is a thread about the guide if you’re interested in reading up on that

@EF431x So do you think it’s better to study using the previously given ACTs or the newest one? I have both so I’ll probably end up doing the newest tests, but for my last few practices tests I was just wondering which would be better. And do you possibly have the link to the thread? Haha, sorry I know that this is asking a lot!!

@Cali1127 If you haven’t taken the April or June 2015 ACTs, then definitely use the newest 2016-2017 prep guide tests. Because while they did take from the April and June tests, they also put in new questions that reflect some changes on the math section and I think the reading and science sections as well (not sure since I don’t own the guide, but maybe someone on here can confirm). When I mention the reading, Idk if there are new questions, but I think it has the updated version that the older guide did not have (literary narrative passages instead of prose fiction, but I’m not 100% sure about that either). This is the thread I was talking about: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/act-preparation/1894910-official-act-prep-guide-2016-2017-mostly-old-wine-in-a-new-bottle.html

And lol it wasn’t much, glad to help!

Bumping! Is anyone taking the test next Saturday? We are counting on this being son’s last try…

Son is taking it. Rising senior. It’s his first. Been studying all summer. Took his final full length practice test today. He’s burnt.

The entire family will be very glad when it’s all over.

Hopefully Saturday’s test will be my last. I have a 29 but I know I could have scored higher that day. Been doing the Online ACT Prep every day and taking Practice Tests from Barron’s and the Red book. Praying for at least a 32+. My state is giving seniors another free voucher for the October test but I am hoping I will already reach my goal haha. Good luck to everyone!

I relate to him!!!

Good luck to all!

Has anybody else used red book+black book to study? How did that work? I was not too familiar with the ACT and did not know there were so many changes so I just used the 3rd edition red book to study :/. Hoping it doesn’t screw me over. I’ve heard tests now are much harder than from the red book(3rd edition). Is that true?

so nervous!! hopeing math won’t be a killer—it’s usually hit or miss with me. did anyone take the act red book practice tests? my scores were 34, 33, 32…for some reason the third one was exceptionally difficult for me. what were your scores?

first and last timer here. been practising since 3 months. Maths is like 34-36 range. English 34-36. Reading 28-32 and Science 30-34. this is how i improved to have this scale.

things that i found is maths is all about practise. english is preparing from barron’s 36 rules and practising, reading improved by learning “Sectioning” a term that i use when i just read the passage under 4 mins and try to hold on all the details and where what part of the passage is located (like examples to main point, arguments and other points) and science is like reading the initial intro in 30 sec and going straight to questions and Scientists viewpoint is easy provided you just hold on the details in your mind for some time.

same are my parents counting on it being the last test.

How long did you guys study & many hours a week?
