serious fafsa issues! Please help! Parent uncooperative

My parents are not legally separated or divorced, but are definitely separated. Basically, I'm in my senior year and I'm going to be thinking about FAFSA really soon here, but my dad (who I haven't seen more than three times in the last three years) is literally too insane to work on his portion of it.

A few questions...
1. What do I do?!
2. Will his house (which has a high property value) be considered an asset on FAFSA, even if it is going under foreclosure?
3. What if he hasn't filed his taxes in a long time?

Please please please help me with this.

Who do you live with? If your parents are separated and you are living with your mom, she would be listed on your FAFSA as your custodial parent. If their intent is to remain separated, and divorce, that is what you would do.

I live with my mom. So even if the court doesn’t/ hasn’t yet recognized a legal separation of my parents than I would complete the FAFSA as if they were? So only my mom would have to fill out her portion of the FAFSA?

Would I still list my father’s assets? I don’t get any financial support from him.

Your father’s assets are likely half your mom’s assets. If so, then half of those assets get listed as your mom’s.

What are those assets? Even if they are inherited, if the funds got mixed at some point with “marriage money” then those assets are no longer just your dad’s.

How was that home purchased? Does your mom own half?

If it is half of your mom’s asset and she doesn’t live in it, then half of that asset is your mom’s. Even if it’s in foreclosure, it may still have value.

Are the assets in your father’s name only? If your father has savings accounts that do NOT have your mom on them at all, they are not your father’s assets.

Your parents do not have to be legally separated to be so designated on FAFSA. You are good using just your mother as the custodial parent. Any support your father has been giving your mother and you during 2014 will be income on the FAFSA. As for the assets, anything in her name and half of what’s jointly owned. as of the date the FAFSA is completed. That would after 1/1/15 for the FAFSA for the school year starting fall of 2015.

For schools requiring NCP inofo, yes, you would need to get your father’s info and yes, it would be a problem if he does not cooperate.
