So I used to listen music or stuff with only my left ear I don’t know why. As a result, my left ear has malfunctioned , and I may need a surgery in order to get a normal hearing ability. That being said, surgery is the only solution for my ear. Meanwhile, I was accepted to Top 40 public university and planned on going there on this Fall. However, I would have to wait to get a surgery due to long waiting lists ( I’m assuming over a month) and I would need a certain period of time for recovery. Moreover, as an international student, taking a flight right after ear surgery is impossible as doctor said. So if I take a surgery and recovery time as well, it will be around October or even November. So what should I do? If I have to skip first and start second semester, I would just take a gap year and re-apply to colleges. My question is 1. if I take a gap year and re-apply to colleges to which I applied last year, would my chances be very low due to the fact that I was already rejected at first? 2. Would colleges understand that I take a gap year for this reason? Thank you for reading and all comments would be appreciated.
Contact the school you’re planning to attend and ask them.
Good luck with the surgery.
You will probably be allowed to defer your entry for a year, whihc is what you should do. You should explain this all to the school immediately. You may need a letter from the doctor.
Contact admissions at your current college and ask them if you can defer your admission for a year, for health reasons. Most colleges will allow this. What it means is that they’ll hold a place for you for next year, so you don’t have to reapply there.
You would be able to apply to additional colleges, if you want to. You’ll want to do something to improve your application, if you’re applying to some of the same schools you did last time (and which didn’t admit you.) So once you recover from your surgery, do something - do significant volunteer work with one organization you really support, or get a job, or do something significant like that.
@RoaringMice should I apply as a transfer student or a prospective student?
Prospective student as you will not have yet started college when you apply.
If hearing in your other ear is fine, another option to consider would be to schedule surgery and recovery for the summer after freshman year.
@evergreen5 yeah that’s what I’m thinking rn. Thank you for your advice tho
