Seriously, whats all this talk about Transfering/Gap Year?

I know many of you are distraught over not getting into your college of choice. I know I am. However, I never thought about transfering or taking a gap year.

First of all, you have to ask yourself why. If its just purely to get into a better school/ivy leauge, then its for the wrong reasons and colleges will see right through that. I know this is a time of wild and sometime extreme actions due to dissapointment, but will you really go through with it?

I know in other countries they take a gap year to travel the world and actually learn. I know one kid who was scrawny, went to Australia, and came back tan, strong, and as a better person IMO. If your just going to take the year off to study SATs, dont.

Transfering...do it only if you really dislike the college. First off, its not easy to transfer, second, if your buddies know your going to transfer because you dont think the college is "worthy" of you, chances are that you probably will end up pretty lonely...

But what do I know, Im only 18. Some parents please shine some light on this issue.

I have to agree that too many people want to take a gap year or transfer. These people should have done better college research to find better matches.

Also, a lot of people just want to transfer for prestige. Transfer admissions is VERY competitive, and in some places, nonexistent.

Taking a gap year 'on a whim' is detrimental. I would seriously be upset if all my friends were going to college and I was not. I'd rather go to my safety college for four years and apply for grad school.

People who want to transfer sometimes don't even know what the college is like. They come on campus knowing they won't make lasting friendships or connections and don't even bother to try and enjoy their stay, making for a miserable experience.

Exactly...I really want people to read this thread.
