Is it okay to write a college essay about a service trip I did (or community service in general)? I've heard that some colleges don't like applicants who have the "save-the-world" mentality. Anyways, any help would be appreciated.

bump? This isn't a common concern?

hmmm i'm not writing exactly about some trip but i am writing about my mom who has really taught me to sacrifice and put others ahead of yourself; then i discuss that i want to dedicate my life helping people...
im actually really worried that this is too common and generic of a topic, but as far as whether colleges like it or not, i really don't think that they would dislike the mentality unless you're writing as if you're going to be the next superman.

I think it's fine as long as you don't make it cliche

IMO it's not the "save the world" mentality that's the problem, it's the idea that flying to some vacation spot and spending a few days doing generic "community service" is actually worthwhile and says something about you. Beware cliche, and beware sounding like a privileged brat.
