Service trip or summer program?

I really want to do both, but it’s pretty expensive. Which do you think looks better, a service trip to another country or a summer program (something like MITES, but not nearly as prestigious)? Honestly, I would love to travel and experience knew things, but at the same time I want to improve at what I plan on majoring in (probably some Science). I feel like a service trip would make you come off as a privileged rich kid who just wants to look good for college.

It makes no difference – do what your prefer and make the most of your experience.

Yes, that’s exactly how it is perceived. If you want to travel, then travel. If you want to provide a service, volunteer in your community - there are lots of worthy causes that would value your time. Do the summer program to test your interest in your potential major and deepen your understanding of the topic. It’s a better use of your time than the superficial exposure you get to another culture on these service trips.

One does not look better than the other.
If you would like to travel, then do the service trip. Don’t dismiss it because it doesn’t look good to colleges.
