Should I get an internship over the summer or do community service abroad? Because I really want to do the latter, but I've heard that an internship looks really good.

It’s May 11th. You must have some AMAZING connections if you can just snap your fingers and achieve either. Do worry about what looks good. Do what will allow you to grow as a person.

Community service will likely be just as good as an internship, especially if it is something that you really want to do.

Internship experiences are ideal-- they’re great for figuring out what you want to do in college/as a career, and colleges like to see them. That said, if there’s some service project you’re passionate about, do it. Can be life changing. Colleges will be happy to see you doing anything you’re passionate about, and be happy to see you weren’t just sitting around all summer.

Just do something productive over the summer. As long as you’re not sitting around playing video games all summer long, you’re fine.

Internship would look better out of those two. Service abroad can just indicate privilege – and colleges want to see you doing service work in YOUR community.

Get a job, intern, study, volunteer, do something that shows effort. And service abroad screams money which colleges don’t like to see:)
