Would you think chances are good for an AdComm to extend grace to a student with literally hundreds of hours of vol service during the work week ( all summer) instead of a job...

Either a job or volunteer work can be impressive. One isn’t automatically counted as better than the other.

It looks great that you have done hundreds of hours of volunteer service, however, holding up a job means just as much. Having a job means you are responsible for yourself and you take care of yourself. Your resume would look twice as better if you did have a job, but because you don’t have one, it won’t hurt you significantly.

Hi Northstarmom ;o)

I had recently read A is for Admission and she talks about the work portion of the app…and looking towards next summer
S would have to do a job and not the vol work like he did all last summer …
The vol service work is not glamorous or easy, in fcat its dirty, tiring etc but worthwhile.

Very few high school students work. In this economy, it’s even harder than it normally is for high school students to get work.

My advice is unless your student needs to work, let the jobs go to those who truly need the money. Let your student continue to do the volunteer work that he loves. Encourage him to take the work a step further by implementing some of his ideas while volunteering. This could be by helping to raise funds for the organizations or by helping create other projects.

For instance, my younger son always loved doing community service, and was very active in a community service organization that did all kinds of service. The summer before his senior year, after there was a highly publicized fight at his school, S decided to help by getting trained in conflict resolution. He then did service projects in which he helped train other students and adults in conflict resultion.

Another example: A student whom I knew got all of the schools in our district to contribute to building a Habitat for Humanity House.

Another example: A student got her school to put on an Oxfam Hunger Banquet. Depending on how this is done, it can raise funds to help the hungry while also helping sensitize people to hunger issues and the world.
