Hi! I was just admitted to Seton Hall Diplomacy and International Relations program at Seton Hall University with a 88 thousand dollar scholarship. I did my research and what I found was interesting but I feel like i need to know more before I set my mind on attending that school. I am more business oriented, especially with international business relations.
How good is the program compared to other schools?
Is it worth the money to attend?
How many people apply/get in?
How is the experience there?
I honestly don’t know what else to ask but feel free to offer any insight or personal opinions to better my knowledge on this school and this program.
Thank You!
I graduated from the Diplomacy School a while ago, and it was an enjoyable experience for me. I sometimes peruse the forum to encourage students to apply to SHU so I hope the following is helpful for you in your decision.
How good is the program compared to other schools?
In terms of “prestige”, it is difficult to say. People in our field recognize Seton Hall and the reputation for the Diplomacy school is growing. Remember the program is still relatively young, (~20 years old) so while name recognition is not its strongest feature, the school is home to some wonderful theorists and practitioners alike who bring a wealth of experience either from academia or “field” experience into the classroom. The proximity to NYC cannot be understated and there has been a lasting relationship between the school and the UN and UNUSA for many years. Students are actively encouraged to pursue internships throughout their time at SHU in New York.
Is it worth the money to attend?
This is a personal decision, but in my case I had received a partial scholarship and covered the rest in loans. It has been a manageable effort so far, and I do not regret the decision to accept the offer from SHU.
How many people apply/get in?
This information might be outdated but my class had about 60 students…would not be surprised if they are nearing 100+ by now. It is relatively small but the group definitely sticks together in an almost cliquey fashion. You will see many familiar faces in your Diplo classes.
How is the experience there?
Wonderful…lots of activities, lectures, special events, internship opportunities in NYC, and career advice from the office. I found a job after graduation that was IR-related, and I have been happy to use my degree for some time now. I am planning on pursuing graduate degrees in the future so I will definitely consider returning to SHU.
Good luck!
