Shall I ruin his life?

He stole my wallet before xmas eve in school library (driver's license, student ID, visa, debit card, health insurance card, airmile+ over 60 bucks of cash), swiped my credit card to buy subway ticket, and attempted to use my debit card.

Now the police has a file for this and the tape that caught him and his big ugly face from library's security camera will be ready in the next day (I was told to pick it up and hand it to police).

I have a choice....pick it up and hand it to police and ruin that guy(probably a student)'s life and career ( HIS CAREER IS PRETTY MUCH OVER BY HAVING A CRIMINAL RECORD). I can afford a lawyer if that is necessary.

OR ignore the tape and let him go since all my IDs have been taken care of and so far no more fraud activities.

So what shall I do?

I've never felt so powerful, so excited....to be able to decide a person's fate.

its your decision really... kinda strange you are "excited" having the power to ruin someones life though.

hahaha...sounds evil huh.......I may just let him go......

There's the chance that if you let him off the hook he'll think he "got away with it" and do the same thing to someone else.

ruin his life, how often do you get to do that ;)

If you hand the evidence over to the police, you are not ruining his life. He did that when he stole your wallet and your identity.

Besides, withholding evidence in a criminal investigation could also be a crime, in which case you'd be ruining your life.

Give the police the tape.

Well, ruining someone's life isn't nice to do but this guy did steal your wallet and try to use your debit card. And like one of the ppl said, if you let this slide...then he would think he got away with it and will proceed to do it again. I highly doubt he will think "Oh wow, I learn my lesson now...I will never steal someone's wallet ever again" when you don't give the police the stuff. This guy knew right from wrong and yet he still steal your wallet so now his actions should meet the consequences. However, one thing you will have to worry about is this guy getting his friends and coming after you to get revenge...I imagine that might happen if you get him in trouble.

But ya, I say get him in trouble because stealing is something that he shouldn't be doing.

Are you a troll? Why is the library giving you the tape, and not the police directly?? And why does it take the libray an extra day to get the tape "ready"?

i don't really think that would ruin his life, but do it anyway

Wouldn't it be an obstruction of justice by not giving the police evidence regarding a criminal act?

That shouldn't be a question. I would first kick the guys ass personally. Then I'd give the police the tape.

You don't know the outcome. The police might not catch the person, the prosecutor might elect not to prosecute the case, the prosecutor might make a deal with no record for good behavior for a period of time, etc.

and he might steal someone else's stuff and ruin their life. I hope he is caught.

give it to the police, how do you know this wont happen again......
i understand if he took some cash, maybe like 20 bucks, i would think about letting him off the hook, but this guy took EVERYTHING. he should be punished and you shouldnt feel bad about it.

I'd throw the book at him. He tried stealing your money. He doesn't know you. Who knows what he would have done if he hadn't been caught. He might even try to do it again. Let the cops and judges take care of it.

He tried to steal your identity. Seriously, you shouldn't be considering the implications of this; he should be.

I don't think it will ruin his life if he is caught. It will probably ruin his day or week though. It is your choice.

Yep, witholding evidence that benefits you in a petty theft crime... I can see it now: maximum security prisons, a "special" cell mate named Tyrone, and gang prisons.

I would confront him with a COPY of the tape and show it to him. Demand that he give me the wallet with everything in it, the cash that was there and the money that he charged with the credit card. If he refuses to comply, then I'd turn him in.
