Hey,

So the other day I had my cousin review my essay. She made a few suggestions I really appreciated, however, she said that I should change the overall theme of my essay and have some sort of underlying moral.

My essay is no doubt shallow - in the sense that it lacks any moral depth. The essay is also very funny and makes multiple small jokes throughout.

I was wondering if this has to be the case? I really liked the direction I was taking my essay, it is very original and represented my character and sense of humor very well. So my question is: does an essay have to be deep and full of morals etc.?

Elaborate some more. What kind of essay is it? Personal experience? Musing on the state of the world?

If you feel comfortable talking about the theme of the essay or want to pm it so we can give you a better opinion, that would be great, but no, I definitely don’t think your essay needs to have some great heavy moral lesson to it. As long as it conveys who you are, I think a light and humorous essay can actually be pretty refreshing.

In my opinion, humor shows personality. I think natural humor would fare better than feigned depth.

It might be easier to judge if you posted or pm’d the essay. Without reading it, my advice would be: it isn’t necessary for it to have some deep moral message or ah-hah moment or anything. BUT, because this is tge traditional route, I would make sure your essay is very good and that you are confident in it. Otherwise, I would worry that the school will think that you kind of blew the essay off or something.
