Sharing, venting....class of 2019

I wonder if kids who audition for both MT and acting have a leg up on those going out just for acting (at least at schools that have both). They get two bites at the apple, and more touch points with with the auditors (e.g., dance calls, monologues and singing). My S was not going to go down the MT route despite being in MT and having voice training for year plus some dance. It was his choice and he wasn’t even contemplating the MT path. I wonder (for those that follow in the future) if they are really wanting to focus on acting whether it’s better to go out anyway for both MT and acting at the colleges that offer both. Thoughts?

I think if you have top notch skills at MT, it might pay off. CMU takes 2-3 MT auditioners a year and offers them acting slots.

I know that Ithaca offered at least on MT applicant a straight acting spot instead (she’s a friend of my kid) Pace does something like that too I think. I wonder- are there more MT applicants?

My son’s an acting major, and at every audition, we noticed that acting applicants were way outnumbered by MTs!

Son auditioned for MT at Otterbein and was accepted for Acting where is he a happy Freshman. He gets to have a foot in both worlds at school with daily dance class, private voice lessons and a group voice class this semester. I think a look at the curriculum would help one decide if the MT track offered the acting courses one may hope to take.

For an acting kid with some MT leanings it is worth looking at what acting programs integrate singing and dance as part of the acting curriculum. UNCSA has worked out perfectly from my D as they do quite a bit of singing and dance work.

I think that lots of programs offer the opportunity to keep a foot in the MT world. (at least all the programs my D investigated and/or auditioned for did) Most schools have the option of voice lessons- though they may not be included as they are for an MT major- as well as dance classes. MY D takes ballet and movement (essentially jazz) 2x a week within her studio at NYU, and is taking voice as a 2 credit class this semester (which she can do every semester) I also personally never investigated a BFA program where MT kids ONLY did the musicals, and acting kids were ONLY in the plays.

Anybody going to Loyola for scholarship auditions this weekend? We are, and we’d love to meet other candidates. Hoping to take a second look at Columbia College also.

…and the waiting begins…

We have two redirections so far…DePaul which he knew right away due to their onsite callback, and today he got an email from Guthrie that he’s not invited for callback weekend. He does have one acceptance to a non-audition BA (can audition into BFA) program.

Such a tough process. We got dinged at DePaul two years ago, and the S is very happy at another program. Hang in there.

My daughter also auditioned for Guthrie. She did not get an email from them yet. I wonder if that is good news, or just because her last name is lower in the alphabet! Oh boy this process is just a killer. Reading the tea leaves, trying not to read the tea leaves, and then just reading them again because I can’t help myself.

Yardley, we are halfway through the alphabet… I’ll keep my fingers crossed for your D!

My daughter just got the email too. No callback for her either. :frowning:

And, given today’s other thread, I think we can cross SUNY off the list. Julliard is also off the list. So, we are narrowing down the choices. We have 6 options left.

Love your safety…it will save a lot of heartache <3

I second Bissou. But take heart- last year my d got 4 no’s (out of 7 BFA schools) before her 1st yes- and then her last 3 bfa’s were yeses. You never can tell how it will turn!

@Yardleysisa having CCM as a safety is no small feat! Hang in there! D’s rejection from Guthrie also just came.

Thank you for the encouragements; they helped. This process is SO HARD and I am really worn out. I look forward to it all being over. But, I guess the next thing I am waiting for is callback announcements from Rutgers. I think those go out sometime this week as well. Fingers crossed. And good luck to all!

I have said it a dozen times- the period after auditions and before results is the hardest part (esp if you get some no’s along the way) stay strong- you can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel!!
