SHC student here willing to answer questions.

can i submit my SHC app. after i submitted my regular penn state app.? because i think i need more time to work on the essays and teacher’s recs, but i want to submit the regular app. before that.

my stat: GPA 3.925(weighted), UW GPA is around 3.8
SAT: 1120/1600
EC: soccer, chess club(captain), german club, french club, PEACE club, interact, teacher’s aide.
Service hrs: around 50-60
took 5 Honor classes and 2 AP’s

Should i try to apply?

psp-fifa-fan: Yes, the shc app is seperate, you can submit it whenever, even after you submit your reg psu app.

Also, it doesnt hurt to apply. What are you gonna lose? A a couple hours of time writing essays/filling in the app? It is time well wasted in my opinion. I can’t say regarding your chances to get in though, you look a bit weak in your GPA, and general ECs. Have you had any unique HS experiences that would set you above the rest of the general applicants?

well, i think my unique HS experience is to overcame my setback/challenge, which is my language barrier.(came to the U.S 5 years ago)

Okay then, make a point to focus on that point in at least one of your essays/personal statements

Could you chance me if it’s not too much trouble? Sorry for the super-long list :</p>

GPA:
9: 4.0
10: 3.95
11: 4.0 un / 4.53 weighted
Overall:3.93 un / 4.17 weighted
7 Honors, 4 AP classes (WHistory, Bio, Calc AB, US Gov), Taking Physics and Chem tests too

SAT:
740 Math
740 CR

I applied as a regular pre-med, not the accelerated one. When you apply to the SHC do they really look at your major, and how does it affect their decision? Just wondering because I know my school has a really good ag program but I never took ag 9, ag 10, AP enviro, or biotech. Would they look at that as not taking advantage of opportunities, or would they just see me taking regular sciences like AP Bio, Microbio, Chem 2, Physics 2, and anat. & phys. 2 as more in line with my intended major?

hey, haha, yea i think i know you :P

anyway, your GPA and SATs are solid (though they claim they dont look at SATs anymore)

I see you only have 3 letters of rec. I would suggest doing all of the ones available on the app (i think they have optional ones on there). I did them all, I had one from Wert (history teacher) and simmons (guidance) + 3 similar to yours. Make sure you have people edit your essays, they are a big deal.

your EC’s are solid as well.

Regarding your major choice, I dont think they take that into consideration. I have found that most of the guys on my floor are either engineering or finance (I am not) so the shc does not have “quotas.”. I doubt the SHC knows of the rigors of CWHS Ag, they will just note you took honors/CP courses in their places.

Also, a note on majoring in Pre-Med- I actually just swtiched to doing a pre-med option in my studies. Declaring your major as PreMed really limits your options after grad, say you dont get into med school…then what? Its up to you really. I found alot of kids up here planning on doing med school major in the college of science (BMB or Bio) or AgScience (Animal Bioscience, and in my case: food science).

Also, the SHC offers a pre-med intergrated program that you can apply to your sophomore year. Basically, being a scholar, if you have a 3.7 and all your prereqs done, you can get early admit to Hershey medschool. You finish your studies at Penn State your jr year and then start at Hershey your Sr year, finishing your B.S. and thesis as well.

Wow thanks, that really helped a lot. Your note on majoring in pre-med makes sense, and a lot of other people have told me it’s not really a good idea since I applied, so I’m probably going to change to bio or biochem. Can you change your major after you’re accepted but before you get there, or do you have to wait until you’re actually at psu?

when you come up here for your FTCAP (where you schedule your classes) you can request a major change then, alot of people do that then. Regardless of your major, most 1st year science students take pretty much the same kinds of classes the first 1 or 2 semesters (chem, bio, calc etc)

hey if i already applied. but didnt apply for the honors college. do you know if theres anyway i could still?

yes you can. Go back to your my pennstate page (where you got your app) and their should be a tab to submit an app to the SHC. The priority deadline is the end of November, so get on it!

oh okayy thanks! is there anyadvantages ,besides the obvious honors recognition, that comes along with being accepted into this program?

yes, there are alot. Just to name a few:

-priority scheduling (even before FB players), lets you get classes at good times and allows you to accomplish multiple minors/majors

-More Financial Aid

-Guaranteed on campus housing for all 4 years

-alot more, but I am a little drained after my chem lab, pm me if your still curious.

I’m a freshman and the SHC and first of all, you get priority scheduling. We scheduled on September 11th and everyone else didn’t until October-ish…some people still haven’t. It helps a LOT. Also honors housing which is in a great location. And just being in Schreyer’s gives you priority in almost anything…if you drop the SHC bomb, you’re more likely to be helped out lol. Also, Schreyer’s has a really good history of sending people to grad school and whatnot…I think it’s like 100%.

In short…APPLY! It’s totally worth it =)

are there any disadvantages to being in SHC?

um, not that I know of. There is a sr. thesis requirement that some may look as a negative but it is a great thing to have for grad school admissions.

agreed. =)

I basically copied and pasted my resume. What do you think my chances are? I know the essays play a huge role. Thanks for your help.

your stats look solid for guaranteed UP admission with $$$. You are active in/out of school with numerous comm. service hours and still keep a good GPA/SAT.

You are correct, the essays and letters of rec are big deals on the app. Make sure you get your teachers to edit and review all of your essays. Regarding your letters, I would make sure to submit a few more than just 2…I think it is like 3 or 4 they ask for…I may be wrong though, I cant remember.

What major are you applying with? Also, what High School are you from? I am from the Reading PA area as well.

I know you’ve mentioned the perks and thesis, but I really don’t understand EXACTLY what SHC does. I mean, are you required to take extra honors program classes? Is the senior thesis the only work that SHC requires you to do? I wouldn’t imagine so, but I can’t seem to figure out exactly what being a member of SHC entails.

bascially your given “honors status” on your transcripts/diploma which is HIGHLY regarded in the industry due to the SHC reputation it has. You also get a more tight knit family, liberal arts, high caliber academic experience, in an already great public university setting.

your required to take a certain # of honors credits per year and those classes really seem spark alot more intellectual convo than their reg. sections. (25 students vs 400). Also, if you are into research as an undergrad, alot of profs seek out specifically, kids in shc to work in their labs. Currently I am doing work in a Food Science lab w/ a nice salary. The thesis is like their capstone to your academic work at PSU, looks excellent for grad school admissions.
