SHC student here willing to answer questions.

I am from Wilson. Where are you from and how did you know that I was from Reading, PA?

Hey, well I went to Weiser so yea, your right next door. haha. Since you wrote down you worked in Reading hospital and Phoebe berks helped give it away. Anyway, what major did you apply for?

I have not applied yet, but I plan to major in Biology or Biochemistry. First I am applying to the Accelerated Med program at Penn State, but one needs to achieve at least a 2100 on the SAT or a 32 on the ACT. I barely miss these mark; however, I know how strictly big schools such as Pitt and Penn State cohere to these cut-offs. Consequently, I am not to hopeful about making the Med program. My next option was SHC, but first I wanted to know if I stood a decent chance of making it. My weakness are my standardized test scores, so I try to make up for them by excelling in other areas. I heard that the average SAT score at SHC for just Reading and Math was in the mid 1400’s.

By the way, cwryan1, what year were you admitted into SHC?

You should get working on your application soon, the SHC one is due by the end of the month for priority consideration.

I was admitted to the SHC for my freshmen year (this year). the SHC claimed last year that they are blind to your SAT/ACT score, rather, they look at your entire application as a whole, evaluating you for admission based off of how rigerous your courseload was in HS, GPA, ECs, Letters of Rec, and essays. Of course, some aspects are weighted a little more than others.

Also, I am looking to attend a Med School after I graduate as well. One program you may find interesting in the SHC is their Intergrated Undergrad/MD program. This program is just for students in the honors college. From what I can tell, if you are admitted into the program, you have a guarantee at Hershey Med and you start attending your Senior year in College. While a freshmen in Med School, you can complete the requirments for your B.S. by substituting Hershey Med courses for ones required for your senior year in your major.

how long should the schreyer essays be? is 500 words too much for an essay? or should i just go with instincts and write as much as i need to convey my thoughts?
thanks!

I think you answered the question yourself…quality over quantity.

how many honors students are admitted in the freshman class?

I believe they send acceptances to a little over 300 incoming freshmen. Out of that pool, they expect about 300 to accept and attend PSU in the fall.

(I
m sorry if this is a repeat post, I new to this board and I put this post on another thread.)

Hi everyone, I’m brand new and am impressed how polite and helpful everyone is on this board. My daughter is hoping to go to U Park next year and also hopes to get into the Honors College. She will have two years of Dual Enrollment at a regional PSU campus with 15 credits by the time she applies next year. Her Penn State GPA is 3.8. Her high school GPA is 3.8 as well with very difficult courses (all honors or AP’s) and she’s in the top 5% of her class (would be higher but a lot of students take easy course loads to get higher GPA’s - she took the harder classes to challenge herself). She has more out of school EC’s than in school, but she is on Challange Bowl Team (like a Jeopardy team?),National Honor Society, Who’s Who, National Society of High School Scholars, etc and long list of honors from teachers. Out of school she has raised a lot of $$ for disadvantaged children since 9th grade (she spends about 100 hours or so a year on this if not more) and volunteers at a local hospital. Her initial shot at the SAT’s she got a 1350. I expect she will get very good recommendations from her teachers as she has won numerous high school faculty honors and has a great relationship with her teachers at Penn State and her high school.

What do you think her honest chances will be to get into the Honors College?

Thank you for your time and best wishes to all who are in, or are waiting to get into PSU.
phillyareamom is online now

^Chances are good. Make sure those essays are better!

Would you say the campus is medium size, than large? According to google map, I was surprise to see the size of the campus.

^I believe UP is like 5,500 acres.

Regarding the $3500 scholarship that all Schreyer Scholars, I’ve heard that the college of Ag and some others give you additional money just for being a scholar. Is that true, and do you know which colleges, if any, give you money?

Yes, I received additional $$ from the College of Ag as well as my individual Dept. I am not sure that all colleges will be hanidng out alot of money to their freshmen scholars, I would contact the colleges directly and ask.

i found out about my acceptance to smeal last week so is it too late to apply to shc? if not when is the deadline? also is shc something you can transfer into even after you start your freshman year?

^You can transfer during your Junior year. I believe you need to have a good gpa, excellent proffessor recommendation, maybe an essay, and other top-notch ****. I know one person who has done it. He had a 4.0 gpa in engineering for his first 4 semesters at PSU. I was surprised 18 credits didn’t scratch him.

You can still apply to SHC now, howver, you will not be considered with the first batch of applicants as you missed the piority deadline.

And SHC is not a college you can “transfer” into. It is very competitive and you would need to apply late in your sophomore year in college to be considered for the jr. gate admissions. Basically, if your accepted that late you get all the perks of a shc scholar, however you will not receive the shc merit $.

Yeah there was no way i couldve finished those 3 essays for the priority deadline lol… teachers were givin out a s hitload of work in november

but here are my stats:
GPA: 91 (3.6?)
SAT: 1460 combined math and CR, 790 writing if that counts at all
EC’s: captain of 3 varsity sports (football, indoor/outdoor track), lot of volunteer hours (church, hospital etc.)

The essays were made available in early September I believe.

It is called time management. Its a skill that if you don’t have already, youl will by the end of your freshmen year at Penn State.
