Shelves behind bed

When I visited Tutwiler earlier this year I saw a TON of girls had tall, wooden bookshelves behind their beds and since then I have been searching EVERYWHERE trying to find a way to buy one. Someone please help?! Where is everyone getting these??

idk what exactly you are talking about. was it a typical cheap bookshelf like you can get at target or walmart?

or ikea?

There’s a link to a picture of one that I found. They were super tall because the beds were at their three foot height I suppose.

Bed Bath and Beyond has a metal over the bed bookshelf that gives on or two shelves plus they show a lamp clamped to side bar.

I have seen those before but what I really need is a wooden version of that exact same thing. I can’t figure out how all these girls found them

^^
Can you post a link…I can’t find it on BBB website.

Can’t find it on BBB either but saw it in store and looked at it because this year D2 is in single so bed on floor and would give her some space above head to put books.

Maybe their Mom made them one custom-sized to fit the width of the bed. Wouldn’t be too difficult if she has a table saw, a skill saw and a drill. ;-)

This is the metal one that is sometimes available from Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

I have not seen the wooden ones. :)

<a href=“Real Simple: Home Decor Ideas, Recipes, DIY & Beauty Tips”>Real Simple: Home Decor Ideas, Recipes, DIY & Beauty Tips; It looks pretty simple to make and not too expensive depending on the materials you use.

They can be purchased here but are quite expensive: $350-$400 http://moxii.com/over-the-bed-shelf.html</a></p>

to make a simple shelf like this you could do it all with supplies from home depot and have all the cuts made there. then all you need is drill, screws and paint.

i would make these all day every day for 350 - 400 bucks!

The home depot idea is perfect! If I bring them that picture, I’m sure they’d know what to do! Thanks everyone

My husband is making a mock-up (hopefully by Friday) from the picture. Once he has purchased, constructed, assembled, etc., I’ll post a pick and price if any one wants one made. Just throwing out this possibility, it can probably be customized slightly.

He’s an engineer and loves to build things. He just said something to the effect of, “oh, I get to use my biscuit joiner.”
Um, OK, whatever. I just need to see the finished product ;)

someone might need to check on the width of the bed in tutweiler. while i am sure the measurement on the drawing would be large enough, you might want it to fit just right.

i did look at the measurements given on the housing site. not sure if they listed the mattress size or the bed size.

also, it would be good to know the ceiling height in tut.

i imagine one could make something like this for about 50 bucks. with out a back, all you would need is roughly 3 1x12x8s.

asunmom - another toy your DH might like for easy construction is a kreg jig. that would be PERFECT for this.

I LOVE my kreg jig…use it all the time. My husband calls it a chick tool…along with my roto zip and dremel.

So I don’t let him use them.

have you seen ana whites furniture plans? most all of them are put together using a kreg jig.

2- 8 footers (the legs)
1- 12 footer (the 2 shelves and the top at 4’ each)

His concern is how to properly construct (or attach) to ensure that it will not be a tipping hazard.

He’s making the mock-up using the standard measurements provided on housing site. We’ll measure room details in Tut, in July, when we are there for BB.

As long as the bed is up against it and nothing heavy placed on the shelves, I don’t think tipping over would be a problem.

if there is no back, then the bed being placed against it won’t really do anything.

how about adding an extra crosspiece to the back at the same level as the highest “rung” of the bed. then ziptie that baby!
