Trying to decide between the two. Any input would be appreciated. Not much info on Shenandoah BFA Acting.
Congratulations on your acceptances to both!
I don’t know about Shenandoah’s acting program; I only know some about about their MT program. However, I know a lot about UArts, as my D is a junior MT major there. We are thrilled with it! The thread below may be a good place to start, at least from my D’s and my perspectives:
If you have other questions or would like to be connected to my D, feel free to PM me or ask me to PM you if you don’t have enough posts to PM yet.
My daughter is at Shenandoah for BFA Acting and is loving it there! To keep up some of her MT skills she takes a dance class and sings in the chorus. I believe she could take voice lessons, but didn’t do so this year. She likes the depth of the Acting program and feels like it has been a better fit for her personally. The musicals and plays don’t distinguish between the programs when casting and both tracks take some classes together. I will say that MT seems to foster more of a close group than the Acting freshmen, which was totally fine for my kid but might not be for some.
The other thing I’d think about a lot is the type of college that would be a good fit, and those two are very different. Shenandoah is a small school, though the campus is fairly expansive and lovely. The Conservatory is a big part of the school, but not everything and so my daughter has friends from lots of different fields of study. The town of Winchester offers enough basics of shopping and food, but it’s certainly not Philadelphia! The environment is just what my daughter wanted, so I’m not putting it out there as a negative, but it should factor it as much as the programs themselves.
Let me know if you have any questions! And congrats!
@myloves thank you so much. I’ve read your posts and they were very helpful. We attended admit one student day and walked around Philadelphia.
@MReader thanks for the info. Can you tell me how many Acting freshmen there are. Also, what is there to do when not in classes.
@CCMTNEWBIE I think there were about 20 freshmen this year, but they don’t have as set a number as they do for MT (which I think is 24). There is also some movement in the programs, so at least one MT moved to Acting. I’d guess it’s harder from Acting to MT. That was something my daughter has thought about, but she happy with the program so she didn’t pursue it.
Even if it’s on the smaller side in terms of students, it’s a regular college campus with sports, clubs, organizations, I’m guessing a newspaper. Seems like a decent amount of activities each day - look at the calendar online. There’s TONS of music events, it being a conservatory. There’s also a Shakespeare and improv group, and many of the theatre kids help on the plays/musicals. I don’t know about weekend life, as my girl apparently plays D&D and goes to thrift shops (of which there are surprising many) with her friends, but she hasn’t been bored.
