Does anyone know how much competition there is for either Technical Production or Lighting Design at Shenandoah? I’d also love to hear thoughts on the program in general.
Also, for a student who wants to stay close to the DC area, are there other options? DS would be interested in either a B.A. that was focused on tech, or a B.F.A… He is not interested in general theatre programs with a lot of acting classes.
I know of one friend who is applying to Shenandoah for Tech. Towson and George Mason have respectable programs, too. If your son is willing to venture out a bit farther, VCU has a great program.
I teach at James Madison, like VCU a bit farther from DC, but a strong technical, management, design concentration. Students successful at KCACTF, SETC, and USITT. Students and Alums also working at locations like Glimmerglass, Santa Fe, Weston, etc … Alums working in DC, NY, Chicago, CA, etc… I am happy to connect you with faculty and students in this area, if you would like. PM me.
I second UMBC. My daughter is an acting major there and I have been incredibly impressed with the design/tech of the shows she’s been in, in addition to the learning and opportunities that her roommate, a design/tech major, has enjoyed.
Thanks everyone! Towson is definitely on our list, and VCU is a great idea to add. JMU, GMU, and UMBC would all be academic reaches for him. I know that some schools accept solely based on interviews and portfolios, and some ask that students be academically admitted first. Does anyone know which category those 3 schools are in?
At JMU we recommend students to academic admissions who we would like in the program. Academic admissions may say no if a student is below the admissions standards, but our recommendation can be a boost for a student who is within range but on the lower side.
