I’m downsizing my home and one of my daughters would like some of my things. A couch, an armchair, a few framed prints. Maybe a desk. Good I’m glad. The couch and arm chair are quality pieces and almost brand new. I’ll securely wrap and pack the picture frames in a box.
The problem. She lives 10 hours away. She’s a medical resident and simply doesn’t have the time to fly here and drive the stuff back in rental truck or van.
Any suggestions on the best way to ship these items to her?
I suspect the load is too small for any moving company to want to deal with it.
There are companies that do small moves. I just did that last year when I cleared out my parents’ condo. We used a company called Mini Moves. It wasn’t cheap but they did a great job.
I also used MiniMoves to ship my mom’s dining room table and chairs from Chicago to San Diego. The moving cost was probably more than the value of the items but they did a good job.
Can you do a small pod? I’m not sure how those work, but that was what was done on campus for kids to store their dorm stuff over the summer at ds’s school.
When we wanted to get some items delivered to us, we worked with a local mover - they happened to be moving someone to Florida, where my parents were downsizing. They charged us a very discounted rate since otherwise they would just have come back with an empty truck.
Some time ago, I got the best rate on a small load from a big moving company that I contacted where the furniture was (not where it was headed.) My things actually had two drop off locations. The rest of the truck was someone else’s stuff that was going about 30 miles from me. I was, able to be flexible on timing so it seems they just waited until they had something I could be combined with.
You might get lucky if you make some calls, especially with the current driver shortage. Companies want every truck going out full!
Thanks for all the suggestions. Now I have ideas on how to proceed.
@DeniseC I didn’t know U Box could provide moving help. That was part of my issue. I live alone and have bad knees. I am not capable of moving a couch–or even an armchair–by myself.
Now I just need my daughters to decide who wants what. Heard from D1, but not from D2.
(They live in different cities in different state so I can’t send everything to just one locale.)
@WayOutWestMom Can you find local help to move the items into a U Box type company? A friend used TaskRabbit to help them move furniture into a moving van, a separate company to do the actual move, and a third Task Rabbit group (at final location) to unload, if your daughter doesn’t have the time, or resources at that end.
