What is the best, least expensive way to do this? I had something shipped directly from a vendor to my daughter and she had to pay $16 to retrieve it. The item itself was only about $30!

If you ever find a reasonable way to ship to Canada, let me know. I’ve paid about $30 to ship a box that would have cost maybe $7 to ship in the States (via UPS). I’ve pretty much given up, and the kid in Canada just has to made do with few-to-no care packages.

I just sent a package to my daughter after doing some googling to research the topic, it is recommended that you always send stuff through USPS. Using UPS or Fedex will increase your chance of getting flagged by custom and getting charge with more fees. If the package is less than 13 oz, it can be sent using regular first class mail which is very reasonable in price. Anything above that in weight, things get really expensive real fast even with USPS. My package was a little less than 13 oz, and it cost about $5 and change to mail to Montreal from Boston using first class mail, next level priority mail would have cost over $20 and then the express mail would have been over $40. The time difference was 7-10 days for first class, 3-5 days for priority mail, and 2-3 days for express mail.

Those are likely customs duties. Most items crossing the border (purchases) will be subject to these.

Sorry, the maximum weight for USPS first class mail to Canada is 4lbs, not 13 oz.

I shipped a care package to my son studying at McGill using Stackry and it was pretty reasonable considering everything I sent…

I shopped online , sent everything to my stackry address (rather than to my home) and had them send to my son…
