jptmom, there is a Kmart in Manhattan, very close to NYU. Prices aren’t outrageous, so whatever you forget, good chance they’ll have it.

Don’t forget that whatever goes into the dorm room has to come out in May. It’s fine to fly out there for move-in, pick up larger items at BB&B, ship stuff, etc. But unless you’re also going to help out in May, it may be difficult/costly to store/ship everything. The week of May check-out, each dorm at D’s school designated a lounge where kids could put things they weren’t taking back home; it was all being donated to Goodwill or something. Amazing the huge amount of “stuff” they left behind - blankets, TVs, DVD players, lamps, etc. If they have to pack themselves and have too much, that’s where it’s going.

They really don’t need so much stuff.

The Manhattan Kmart is right over Penn Station, on 34th St and 7th Ave. It’s a big store, 3 levels. There’s also (or used to be) a Container Store on 7th Ave and hmmmm, 18th St. (maybe 17th or 16th?)

the pick half thing really worked. When my daughter saw all her tshirts piled up and realized something had to give, she decided she didn[t need all her concert shirts, or 3 green sweaters. She knew I would ship off stuff in those flat rate postal boxes. As it turned out she surviced without the must have spice girls shirt. And when she came back home, she had clothes,

If she didn’t wear something when she came back, off it went to charity.

Today I went through Ds rooom, with her permission, and sorted stuff. All stuff anumals together, all boots together, all jewelru consolodated, that kind of thing. I know with my ds, they would have just thrown stiff in suitcases and ended up with 4 gray sweats and no room for the blazer for interviews.

What we also did was put he suit cases in the living room and spread out the weight. Same with the couple of boxes. We bought a had scake to weight the luggage after it was packed.

One thing we over packed was school supplies. And we should have pscked more of those wall hook sticky things. Lots of them.

Fedex GROUND. It will take about 3 or 4 days to get from NY to FL. You can drop the packages off at a local Kinkos.

I think they also have a combined shipment rate for multiple boxes shipped to the same destination at the same time.

since you have a little while before leaving, google now the locations of costco, sam’s club, target, wal-mart, wal-greens, ikea, hardware store, etc. so that you can visit them once you arrive. also check the bookstore on campus as they may have some nice storage items in stock. make a list now of what you’ll be wanting to buy upon arrival, i.e., pillows, mattress cover, milk carton storage cubes, etc.

I just want to thank all of you who suggested bringing all of D’s stuff with us on Southwest instead of shipping it. It worked out perfectly! We had a bunch of canvas duffel bags from sleepaway camp, and we managed to get everything into 6 checked items (duffels and suitcases). Having the duffels made it easier to come home, since we could just stuff those into the suitcases.
We bought D a refrigerator for her dorm in Target near my in-laws house (roomie was buying the microwave). Well, H needed a microwave for his office, and we saw one in Target for $29.99 (wow!), so H bought it there and we checked it as luggage on Southwest coming home! Oh, how I love Southwest!
