Shots have been fired on the campus on the University of South Carolina. Police from several agencies have been called to respond to an active shooter.

A campus-wide alert was sent to students at about 1:20 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Students, staff and faculty are warned to seek shelter immediately. Police have blocked off the streets in the area of College and Park streets.

The CarolinaAlert says shots were fired at the Newschool of Public Health.

People in the State House have been warned to stay indoors. The grounds are not on lockdown, but security officers at the State House say they are performing building checks and patrolling the area.

No longer threat. That went out around 2:15. Suspected murder suicide. Thankfully there was never an “active shooter” running around on campus but they treated it that way until they knew. Told students to stay inside and locked down buildings.

I am sure the family of the murder victim would say it was an “active shooter” and find nothing to be thankful about…

Sent from phone and sorry it that sounded flip. I didn’t mean it that way intparent. I was just saying I’m glad that USC treated it as a high level threat to entire campus until they were absolutely sure the threat was contained. “Active Shooter” was the schools term. Social media had some saying there was ongoing shooting, etc which never happened and rumors spread faster than truth. Since I have a child on campus, I am glad there wasn’t someone loose on campus. It is a tragedy for those involved.

As a side note, I have friend who teaches in adjacent building. When alert came out and students were told to remain inside, she had students try to leave. She insisted they stay. Please tell your kids to follow instructions when alerts come out…like I said no one knew what was happening at first.

As a parent that was pretty scary to get that alert on my phone this afternoon , but happy with the way it was handled . D had just returned to dorm and they were put on lockdown immediately and they even made them stay in dorm for a while even after the all clear went out . I agree with you scmom12 …as soon as I got that alert I immediately texted my d to see where she was and tell her to stay put . Very scary though … She said all her oos friends were texting her as it was all over twitter !
