Shootings near Marquette

Students and parents,
Should I be (very) worried? Not trying to be inflammatory, sincerely asking.

I lived near this area until recently. It’s not any worse than Cincinnati, Louisville, Knoxville or any other campus close to a decent size city.
Of course you should be worried (especially if you’re a mom as your name implies). But this happened at midnight–tell your student to walk in large groups after dark. And remember this was not a ‘campus shooting’ but a more typical robbery type.

16th and Kilbourn Avenue was dark (not very well lit) and not a place I would have been alone in the early 70s when I was at MU. I think the overall campus area is actually far safer now than when I was in school. Exercising good judgment when out and about at night should be the mantra for anyone attending an urban school from Rutgers, Yale, Wash U to Marquette.

I will put in a plug for the campus safety program. My son works for SSP (student safety program) They provide walking escorts, limo service with pick up and drop off even to “off campus” locations (certain boundaries apply) and a limo shuttle that runs up and down the main streets of campus. The DPS (department of public safety) is an armed campus police force with very quick response to any situation called in ( the SSP workers are always on the look out for problems)
The dorms are all located in safer areas and we used university apartments whicb wer in the heart of campus when they left the dorms.
There is no reason to be walking alone on the outskirts of campus and MU really takes safety seriously.

Just read that while neither the shooter or victim was a Marquette student or employee, a student LIMO driver called in the shooting to MU DPS who ended up identifying the suspects and assisted with apprehension. DPS was on the scene in minutes and had medical help for the victim there rapidly.
